Takealot versus Makro — online pricing comparison

Makro has big plans to increase its online sales and compete with South Africa's Internet retail giant Takealot. However, a MyBroadband comparison showed that Makro's pricing on tech products is generally higher.

MyBroadband compared a sample of ten items, including smartphones, TVs, gaming consoles, wearables, and computer peripherals.

Now years after my ordeal with Makro, I still wouldn't buy from them. Online and offline. Screw them.

I avoid even instore Makros like the plague. Awful business to deal with - I can only imagine the nightmare of online

Pricing is irrelevant when their logistics are mostly still so much fail. Could be cheaper and I still wouldn't use them.
It's entirely this... I'll shop in store so long as I can walk away with the product, but online and then leave it to their warehousing lot, hell no.

I have had no problem buying white goods from them this year, actually surprised when I ordered a freezer in the evening and had it in my house the next morning. My other items where delivered before promise dates.

A huge improvement from my previous experiences with them in the past.

Ordered a washing machine about 15h00 on the Thursday afternoon before Good Friday, was priced about R900 less than Takealot and had free delivery.
Wumdrop delivered 10h00 Saturday morning and kept me up to date.

Momentum has a rewards program called Multiply (similar to Vitality) and one of the perks is you can get discounts on Makro vouchers - 15% on the highest tier. That immediately tells me that Makro would have to make at least 15% on top of their "usual" profit margin just to cover that.

And previously Multiply partnered with Takealot and you could get up to 25% discount if I recall correctly. So when comparing prices Takealot was always more expensive, but it made sense to buy from them if I subtracted the discount and factored in the free shipping it would actually be about 10%-15% cheaper than buying from somebody else.

What I have seen is that since they removed the Multiply discount their prices have actually become more competitive.
