Taking on Telkom

Very, very interesting. Is this why GTS has been so quiet lately? Not responding to anything?

Looking forward to more information when it becomes available!

25% cheaper, 22 times faster and a triple-play offering. Sounds fantastic. Let's hope ICASA doesn't screw it up and licenses them quickly.

Is anyone on this forum part of the trials in Tshwane or Durban? Or know anyone who is? I'd like to hear how the PLC technology is shaping up.

This is what I like to hear people that will put their money down and see what great opportunities there are to compete with Telkom. We need more people like this that will throw what they've got at the market.

This may just be the most interesting piece of news to come out of the ISP sector in the last decade. Andrian Maguire is a very clever man, and this is a strategic move that very few people saw coming.Mike Rwayitare has the cash to fund this expansion, and it sounds like they will be able to roll this out at the speed needed to get our country connected.

I cannot wait to sign up!

Hopefully soon - we have waited too long to see Telkodemonopolies suffer from true fixed line broadband competition, and this is one beast that needs to be slain ASAP - considering that guavamint is still doing the price fixing thing by protecting Telkodemonopolies.

Down with her Poisonous Ivyness and her [mis]'managed liberalistaion' crapola. Open up the market to full-on competition & let NeOTel stand on its own feet or die quietly.

Ironic

Ironic that Telecel does not operate in Rwanda... something to do with MTN's 9 year monopoly...

He owns des mille collines - `hotel rwanda' to those who have seen the movie.

gts going to take a long time to do it.i applied l071006 for adsl eta feb next year.....

Exciting stuff, but where is the bandwidth going to come from to fuel this?

Having a 90 Mbit/s (min) connection is one thing but something will have to be done about the current bandwidth price gouging that ICASA seems to conveniently ignore.

You people are forgetting where we live and who is in charge of the Telecoms industry in South Africa.

I wouldn't be surprised if ICASA, Ivy The Terrible and the upper echelons of Telkom aren't in a crisis meeting right now trying to figure out the best way to keep this from happening any time soon.

Don't get your hopes up, that will only bring you unhappiness.

Well now , suck on that telkom , it will be a case of buying a simple router type thing , plug it into a wall socket , and away you go . You need electricity to use a PC , now if you have electricity you can now have broadband without needing telkom . I was wondering about this a while ago . We have some save power thing going , you have some unit installed at you house and during peak hours eskom can switch off you geyser for example to save power .

The only way to do that or anything like that , is to have a system set up to send/recieve a signal from one spot to another . So if the can transmit signals already , then they must be damn near being able to offer broadband. Signal from point a to point b . Has anyone thought how this will effectively kill all wireless service ? Not for those who use it with a laptop to be mobile , but for those who have to use iburst or sentech cos adsl is not available in their area or whatever reasons telkom give them .

Simple really . Got electricity ? Then you have got broadband ! Even farmers living in the middle of nowhere , the rural areas , the previusoly disadvantaged if you can switch on a tv , you can switch on the internet . This is such fab news !! Would someone here please try and contact these folks as offer our collective help and support . Pity we cant award a nobel peace prise to these folks !!!!!

/me runs away filled with visions of a new and better South Africa .

Thanks for your note of positiveness.

 April Fools or Fri 13th? Lovely, nice to see an entirely independant organisation bringing it to Telkom. As Sneeky said, I'd also like to know where the bandwidth is coming from, if and this is a big if, Mike has already met with Govt officials which is most likely perhaps he knows something about EASSY which we don't ?

I'm of course a bit apprehensive (as we all are) but I'll remain hopeful. This would be a fantastic breath of fresh air and would force proper competition. Man I'd love it.
