Tankless geysers

See that’s pretty much the cost of just making my geyser run off solar and never needing to refill anything.

And it’s a large chunk of nearly going fully off grid should I ever want to go there.
What is your definition of going off grid ? Cause to me that is not a large chunk of going fully off grid.

Well if you are going with the cheaper deep cycle type setup it’s a rather large portion.

If you want to go fully Li-ion it’s not so much but it’s still money “lost” to that effort.
 
You see your gas bill there is pretty much my entire hot water bill for the same period so it’s inconsequential to me and just more work.

And that’s for 4 people.

I’d simply switch it all to solar and retain the conventional electrical geyser and stove if I want to get away from Eskom.

Gas is not the answer for me.
That gas bill is for all cooking and hot water for 2 people for on average 40 days. I'm currently on day 49 of this particular bottle.

And equating 1 limited fill ( 150-250L ) electric geyser conversion to 2 Gas geyser installs is laughable,and I got the quotes to convert those to Solar to compare with originally. I feel like he's trolling at this point or trying to sell something

Let me see if I can summarize Sauron's Counters:
* It's too complicated
* I don't want to carry cylinders around
* I don't want to use batteries or electricity for a pilot
* Too much effort to organize cylinder swapouts
* You aren't saving money
* This super-electric guzzling induction cooker's heat control is far superior
* Costs more than Solar
* Might as well go offgrid for nearly the same cost

There's logical arguments for Solar obviously,but I've gone for convenience,running costs and cheaper initial outlay,with a functionally unlimited,or near-unlimited supply of hot water and cooking

BUT MUH ARGEWMENTS
 
What's the cost of upgrading to a Gas Geyser?
I'm in the process of buying my first home, I will be staying alone, so a geyser wastes a lot of electricity in my household.

The new place already has a gas stove, i figure with gas Geyser and Gas stove i'll bring my electricity bill right down.
I'm looking at long term cost savings.
If you get good sunlight, there's a definite case for solar over gas. When I started this thread I had overlooked solar because I thought it was too complicated but I've come to learn otherwise. There's savings on offer either way though.

I didn’t say it doesn’t work for other people.

I simply said it doesn’t make sense for me for the various reasons I listed above.

Just because swopping bottles and allowing access isn’t a massive inconvenience for you, doesn’t change the fact that it remains one for me.

I didn’t even get to the potential safety hazard introduced…

You are also taking most of what I said out of context for hur dur bullshit laughs. I never said anything remotely like you can go off-grid for the same cost.

What I did say was that because I don’t want gas for cooking it’s only application would be the geyser and then for the same money I could rather retrofit that with solar which I never have to worry about again.

Yea I realised that when I posted.

I however have no interest in cooking with gas.

I pull out the trusty old Cadac if I absolutely have to under load shedding, but quite honestly that has happened once. Rest of the time I light the braai or get takeaways.

For me i think hot water on demand works better since i live alone, my waste comes from keeping loads of water hot. I will already have a 19KG for the stove, so next question is can they split the one bottle ?

I have the two bottles, on changeover, mounted down the side of the house. The gas line goes under the house to a "T" - piece, where it branches one line to the water heater on the outside wall, and the other up through the (wooden) floor to the stove. Luckily I have a crawlspace under the house for such access.

Fair enough. But the wife and I cook every night. We don't braai as much as we'd like, and takeaways are pretty much a pizza, maybe half a dozen times a year. So for us it works well. YMMV of course!
 
I opted to go gas a few years back. I have a gas geyser (Bosch) as well as a gas stove running off a set of bottles with a switchover mounted outside. The geyser requires absolutely zero electricity supply or batteries. The new geysers have a turbine ignition system built into the line which ignites the gas as soon as you open the hot water tap. For me personally it was well worth it as I have hot water on demand as well as a being able to cook / heat food during load shedding.

Oh yeah same I don’t really braai much at all. Maybe once a month.

I just meant if Load Shedding is at a kak time I’ll make a plan to do that rather than whip out the gas.

With two kids in the house takeaways are often the one thing that makes a kak load shed schedule bearable.

Load Shedding doesn’t affect the geyser at all.
