An invigorated Tata Motors is planning an EV led, new model offensive to further accelerate its galloping sales growth and consolidate its first mover gains in India’s nascent EV market.

A newly established subsidiary TPEML infused with funding of Rs 7,500 crore will lead the charge. Tata Motors’ new EV division has ambitious plans to have a portfolio of 10 EVs within the next five years.

To take advantage of the Nexon EV’s runaway success, Tata Motors is developing a bigger, all-electric coupe version of the Nexon as a key model in its EV portfolio. There will also be an IC engine version.

Originally conceived as a mid-size SUV back in 2018 to rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, The Nexon Coupe will in essence be a stretched version of the current Nexon with a new coupe body style, designed to accommodate both petrol and diesel engine options.

The project was shelved in order to save money, given the struggling performance of Tata Motors before the pandemic hit.

However, after Tata Motors change of fortunes, the company has decided to revive the project with plans to launch an EV version of the Nexon Coupe with an IC engine derivative to follow

The Coupe will share the same platform (X1) as the current Nexon and both body styles will have a lot in common. The A-pillar, windscreen, front doors will remain unchanged and its only aft of the B-pillar that the body is all-new.

The rear doors are longer as is the tapering roof which meets an all-new rear end with a large overhang. The extension at the rear is expected to deliver more rear seat legroom and substantially more boot space.

Sources tell us that the wheelbase is approximately 50mm longer, achieved by a change to the wheel geometry, whilst the overall length is around the 4.3 metre mark which in terms of size, puts the of the Nexon Coupe smack in the middle of the mid-size SUV segment.

Design is expected to be a big differentiator for the Nexon Coupe which apart from its sportier body style will also get a completely redesigned nose to differentiate it from its sub-4 metre sibling.

Tata Nexon Coupe to launch in 2023 - Autocar India

  • Tata Nexon Coupe will be larger than the standard model
  • It will launch first as a pure EV
  • Petrol- and diesel-powered version will follow

In January, we broke the news that a SUV Coupe version of the Tata Nexon is in development, and that it would come with electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) options.

While the SUV Coupe was originally slated to debut this year, our sources tell us that Tata is likely to launch it in India sometime in 2023.

Tata Nexon Coupe: what do we know?

Firstly, we know that the new Nexon Coupe is going to be based on the same X1 platform as the regular Tata Nexon, though it will be longer, measuring in at around 4.3 metres.

This is down to the fact that the Nexon Coupe was conceived as a midsize SUV – back in 2018 – to rival the Hyundai Creta, but was shelved due to financial reasons.

According to our sources, the increase in length will largely come from an increased rear overhang, though it will also have an approximately 50mm longer wheelbase, which will be achieved by tweaking the wheel geometry.

In terms of its design, the Nexon Coupe is expected to feature a number of changes over the standard Nexon to help differentiate it.

Up front, the Nexon Coupe will likely sport a heavily redesigned nose, though the A-pillar, windscreen and front doors will remain more or less unchanged.

The main change will be in profile, where the SUV Coupe is set to feature longer rear doors and a tapering roofline that will merge neatly with the new fastback style boot.

Another thing the increased rear overhang is expected to add is improved rear seat legroom and a significantly larger boot.

Tata Nexon Coupe: expected powertrains

We expect the Nexon Coupe to be launched as a pure EV first, and that will be followed by an ICE version. As things stands, there are no concrete details on the EV powertrain, although it is fair to assume that the Nexon Coupe EV will use the same set-up as the Nexon EV long range that is set to launch next month.

This means it will get a larger 40kWh battery pack, and the carmaker is also likely to upgrade the larger Nexon Coupe’s electric motor with a unit that develops more power and torque than the standard Nexon EV’s 129hp and 245Nm motor.

Powering the ICE version will likely be a new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that is expected to produce around 160hp as Tata’s plan to produce this bigger petrol engine has been revived.

The carmaker won’t use the regular Nexon’s 1.2 turbo-petrol, because firstly, it won’t get the tax benefits on the Nexon Coupe due to its length being over 4 metres, and secondly, it will be a touch underpowered for a car that size.

The 1.5-litre diesel engine currently used in the Nexon is also expected to be used in the Nexon Coupe, though it will likely be an updated unit that complies with the BS6 Stage 2 norms (set to come into effect in 2023), and makes a little bit more power.

Tata launches E20-compliant Tiago, Punch, Altroz & Nexon - Team-BHP

Tata Motors has launched its BS6 Phase II range of passenger vehicles, featuring RDE and E20-compliant petrol, diesel and CNG powertrains.

Tata Motors claims that the upgrades made to the engines have not only helped lower emissions but have also improved the low-end drivability of the Altroz and Punch. They also get Idle Stop Start as standard across all variants.

The Altroz and Nexon are available with upgraded Revotorq diesel engines that are said to be more responsive. Tata claims the Nexon’s 1.5-litre diesel has been retuned for better performance.

The carmaker has also been working on the Tiago and Tigor. Both cars are said to benefit from lower NVH and now come equipped with TPMS.

Furthermore, Tata Motors has increased its standard warranty from 2 years / 75,000 km to 3 years / 100,000 km.

2023 Tata Nexon EV gets a major refresh

The electric vehicle market never rests, and Tata Motors is ensuring it keeps pace. The Indian automaker has lifted the curtains off its updated 2023 Nexon EV facelift. It’s not entirely a metamorphosis but definitely more than just a nip and tuck.

The new, clearly Curvv-inspired approach brings the Nexon EV more in line with its petrol and diesel siblings. Seems like Tata wanted the whole family to look alike. Thankfully the techno-wizards at Tata haven't just rested with a cosmetic makeover. The Nexon EV comes packed with quite a list of upgrades.

First of all - no more Prime and Max! Tata decided that the Nexon EV deserved variant names that get straight to the point. Enter the "Long Range" and "Mid Range." The Long Range version promises an impressive 465 km (up from the earlier 463 km) thanks to the 40.5 kWh battery pack. The Mid Range has a smaller 30 kWh battery and delivers 325 km, a token boost from its previous 320 km. That's just a fancy way of saying they squeezed out an extra mile or two.

Tata's Nexon EV now boasts a Gen2 motor, letting it rev up to a whopping 16,000 rpm from the earlier 12,000 rpm. The power? A commendable 142.6 horsepower - yes, point six exactly - with a torque of 215 Nm. Surprisingly, this electric steed can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds, finally topping out at 150 km/h. That's up from the earlier modest 119 km/h.

Tata apparently has taken another look at the NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) levels, making it an even smoother ride. Plus, there is improved regen braking control via paddle shifters with an added efficiency improvement between 10-15 percent. Finally, to eke those extra miles out of the battery, Tata fitted the lowest rolling resistance tires in its class to the new Nexon.
