Tata Nexon

I really like this little SUV. Would love to have one. Seems TATA is upping their game with each and every new model they are putting out.

Looks good! Hopefully it has at-least a 4 star euro ncap safety rating!

Tata Zest Achieves A 4 Star Result In India

As part of the #SaferCarsforIndia campaign, Global NCAP tested two versions of the Tata Zest.

The standard non-airbag version resulted in a disappointing zero star score for adult occupant protection and one star for child occupant protection.

As has been the case with other manufacturers, Global NCAP offered Tata the opportunity to test another version of the Zest with more safety features.

Accepting the opportunity, Tata introduced a structural improvement to the entire Zest range while Global NCAP tested the new version with optional airbags.

The Zest with two airbags and two pretensioners showed very substantial improvements and, together with the seat belt reminder in the driver seat, the Zest achieved an impressive four star score in adult occupant protection.

Tata also selected other child restraint systems for the airbag version, improving the rear seat child occupant protection to 2 stars.

Tata have announced that the improvements made to the structure will be brought to the entire vehicle range, for both airbag and non-airbag versions.

Looks good on paper but the issue with Tata & GWM/Haval/Gravel is the slow turnaround time for new products from when their are available in their homeland. At times we're talking 18; 24 months or even longer as a worse case.

Local homologation does not take *that* long.

Also don't give me the "find the right pricing" story.

Local homologation does not take *that* long.

Indeed so - all they had to do in the case of the India-manufactured Datsun Go & Renault Kwid was make it standard equipment (instead of an extra-cost option) to have the driver's side airbag & seat-belt pre-tensioners fitted for the SA market.

Other than that, NO other 'significant' changes had to be made, AFAIK!

Tata Nexon : Official Review

The Tata Nexon is on sale in India at a price of between Rs. 5.85 - 9.45 lakhs (ex-Delhi).

What you’ll like:

• Very well-priced for what it offers. Undercuts all rivals
• Funky styling ensures that the Nexon stands out from the crowd
• Solid build & construction, unlike many of its flimsy competitors
• Nice, spacious cabin with comfortable seats. You get a practical 350-liter boot too
• 1.5L diesel & 1.2L petrol offer good performance. Diesel is especially impressive
• Balanced road manners for such a tall car. Fine EPS & 209 mm of ground clearance!
• Loaded with features: Driving modes, LED DRLs, reversing camera, 8-speaker ICE etc.
• Dual airbags, ABS & Isofix child seat mounts are standard on all variants

What you won’t:

• Overdone design will be a turnoff for many of you. Rear end is way too busy
• Jiggly low speed ride; bumps are felt in the city (unlike other Tata cars)
• 3-cylinder petrol can't match 4-cylinder competition in NVH. Has lag too
• The observant eye will notice some rough edges in fit, finish & quality
• Concerns over long-term reliability, more so of the freshly developed engines
• Missing essentials (telescopic steering adjustment, auto-dimming IRVM, proper dead pedal)
• Tata's inconsistent after-sales experience is far from that of Maruti & Hyundai
• Shorter service / checkup interval of 6 months & 7,500 km (rivals have 12-month gaps)

Is the engine in house or a rebranded other manufacturer?

Following are the special features of Tata's Revotron engine -

1. Tata's first indigenously developed MPFI engine.

2. Tata's first Turbocharged Petrol Engine.

3. The ECU (Engine Control Unit) has three pre-programmed modes (Sport, City & Eco) which alter the way, the amount and the timing of Fuel Injection in the inlet manifold.

4. Since its turbocharged you get good low end torque (good pickup) which is suited for city driving and a strong mid range too which is good for Highway driving.

The 3rd point is the one they are proudly marketing and that is because in this price segment this is the first engine to have 3 different settings/states of tune.

In the real world you'd have to pay a little bit of attention to actually notice the difference between the 3 modes.

In simple terms, for Tata Motors, the Revotron engine is like their baby which they are trying to show off to their neighbours by making him perform three different types of dance forms.

At Tata Motors, we invest significant resources in the development of vehicle engines that are fuel-efficient and performance-oriented.

In 2014, we unveiled the Revotron (petrol variant) and Revotorq (powered by diesel) engine family for usage in our passenger vehicles.

Both variants of the engine underwent rigorous testing before being launched for use in passenger vehicles. Our Tiago hatchback, which is available in both engine variants, completed the Geared for Great Challenge – a 50,000 km endurance test under high-stress conditions. The two variants averaged 120kmph during the 18-day, non-stop, high-speed drive.

Revotron Engines

Tata Motors’ indigenously developed Revotron 1.2T engine is India’s very first 1.2L turbocharged, multipoint, fuel Injection petrol engine. It is designed to deliver maximum fuel economy while providing a zippy driving experience.

A unique feature of this engine is its multi-drive mode, which is the first in its segment. The ability to switch between Eco, Sport, and City modes enables you to change the performance settings of your Tata car as per your requirement.

Switching to the Eco mode optimizes the Revotron 1.2T engine’s power and torque, and is suitable for achieving maximum fuel economy.

The engine’s output is maximised in the Sport mode, making it ideal for performance driving.

In the City mode, Revotron 1.2T engine increases its output till it balances performance and fuel economy.

These three driving modes are supported by a cutting-edge engine management system (EMS). A stiffened crank case helps minimise engine vibration, noise, and harshness, while a smart electronic control unit enables precise control.

Revotron 1.2T engine, which received critical acclaim, was globally benchmarked for advanced on-road performance. AVL Austria, which is the world’s largest independent engineering company for development of powertrain systems, optimised the design of Revotron 1.2T engine.

Bosch, INA, and Honeywell were our key technology partners in the development of this engine.

This ultra-quiet engine is the driving force behind our Tiago and Bolt hatchbacks, as well as Tigor and Zest compact sedans, which were well-received by critics and consumers alike.

The Revotron 1.2T engine will also feature in the Tata Nexon sub-compact SUV.

Revotorq Engines

Tata Motors’ Revotorq 1.05L diesel engine has been designed to withstand extreme performance, while simultaneously providing a unique driving experience. Like the petrol variant, this engine has been crafted to maximise fuel economy, while delivering a highly-refined road performance.

This engine has also been globally benchmarked, based on parameters such as performance, refinement, and economy.

It also offers the multi-drive mode, which is supported by a state-of-the-art EMS. Making its debut with our Tiago hatchback, Tata Motors’ Revotorq 1.05L diesel engine is also powering the Tigor compact sedan.

The diesel variant of the Tata Nexon sub-compact SUV will also come fitted with this engine.

These advanced engines will be featured prominently in several of our current and upcoming cars.
