Tata Returns to SA

Good to see a manufacturer bringing proper entry level cars like that hatch back to rival offerings from Toyota, VW, Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia. The Chinese, with all their value offering never did a proper entry level (save for that BAIC but that was a rubbish car).

Tata reveals four new models for South African relaunch, with prices starting under R200,000

South Africans in the market for an affordable vehicle will be even more spoiled for choice from September, when Tata relaunches as a passenger car brand.

Backed by the Motus Group, which is the country’s largest vehicle retailer, Tata will hit the ground running with four products, covering a significant portion of the passenger car market.

Pricing will be announced in September, but company officials have said the Tiago entry-level hatchback will start below the R200,000 mark, while the Land Rover-based Harrier will cost up to R700,000.

The Punch and Curvv compact SUVs will also form part of the initial line-up, with the Nexon and Sierra SUVs joining the range at a later stage.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) will initially launch with a network of 40 dealerships around the country. Plans are to increase this network to around 60 by the third year of operation and 70 by the fourth. Sales ambitions are bold. The long-term goal is to become a top-five player in the passenger vehicle space, with a 6% to 8% market share.

Local media got a closer look at the four new products at the launch event held in Sandton on Tuesday evening, and most were impressed by the build quality of these vehicles. Although the jury is still out until they have been driven, the vehicles appear to have come a long way since the humble Indica models that launched the brand locally 20 years ago.

Tata confirms its new models for SA

Indian car brand, Tata, has announced a line-up of 4 new models with which it will return to South Africa’s new passenger-vehicle market in September after a hiatus of about 6 years.

Cars.co.za reported in February 2025 that Tata passenger vehicles were set to be reintroduced to the local new-vehicle segment during the 2nd half of the year in partnership with Motus Holdings, which confirmed in an interim results presentation that it had “entered into a distribution agreement with Tata to be the exclusive importer of passenger (models) in SA and certain neighbouring countries”.

Leading automotive retail group Motus already distributes the Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Kia and Renault brands in South Africa, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) will operate through a nationwide network of 40 dealerships, with plans to expand to 60 outlets by 2026, the division said in a statement.

Although Tata left Mzansi’s passenger-car and LCV segments at some point in the 2nd half of 2019, larger commercial vehicles from Tata (that is, buses and trucks) have remained on the local market courtesy of Tata International South Africa.

But now TMPV is back, officially, following a launch event in Sandton, Johannesburg on 20 August 2025, where it unveiled the following new Tata models in SA: the Tiago compact hatchback, Punch and Curvv compact family cars (small crossovers) and Harrier family car (medium SUV).

Tata Motors has re-entered the South African passenger vehicle market after a 6-year absence.

Motus Holdings will handle distribution, retail, and aftersales for Tata Motors in South Africa. At launch, the company will operate through a nationwide network of 40 dealerships. It plans to expand to 60 retail outlets by 2026.

The carmaker’s product line-up will include the Harrier, Curvv, Punch, and Tiago, which will go on sale in September 2025. Tata also plans to bring the Nexon and Sierra SUVs to South Africa at a later date.

The Harrier will be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 168 BHP and 350 Nm, while the Curvv will be available with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The South Africa-spec Punch will come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 87 BHP and 115 Nm. The Tiago will use the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder unit that makes 84 BHP and 113 Nm and will come with a choice of a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT.

The main difference is that the Indian model has fixed front seat-belt mounts, whilst the SA model has height-adjustable front seat-belt mounts... ;)

Apparently Car Magazine SA already pre-empted the launch of the new Tata Tiago by revealing the pricing structure BEFORE the official release date... and the URL has subsequently been withdrawn - BIG Ooopsie there... ;)
