tax return 2011

This past tax year I've started doing some freelance IT work for a few companies and other random people on the side. Nothing fancy - it's just me, myself and I (no registered business name or VAT nr. or employees or leased properties or a team of accountants on 24x7 standby... heck, all my invoices were done in MS Word! :P)

I'm trying to figure out how exactly I should declare this income on eFiling. There is an option under "Local business, trade and professional income" but when I answer "Yes" there they want like 2 pages of extra info... stuff like turnover/sales figures, profit margins, depreciation values, balance statements and heaven knows what else. It just doesn't sound very relevant to the few thousand Rands of extra income I'm trying to declare.

Any other IT freelancers here in a similar situation? How did you declare yours? Do I just leave all these fields open and hope for the best? (yes, I'll obviously call SARS if I don't get an answer here)

don't click on "local business and trade" click on "other receipts and accruals". you will then get an additional code 4214 to complete once this has been clicked. fill in the income there.

Filed mine and I love the amount :D

Just hope I don't get audited again this year. It will be 4 years running then that I'm audited. I thought it's suppose to be random? :(

Think they have a threshold amount.. don't think its random.

Still nothing on mine - logged on again and it stays the same... I guess the person signing off is on leave :(

if it is over a certain amount the system will automatically mark it for audit. so it's not random pitbull sorry.

The 'other' audit where they pay you a visit is random, but this request for docs is based on payout.

Errr...

I have a question...if anyone can please help.

I get a basic and commission and the on top of that i get manager's bonus and incentives.
I was paid in January an incentive of R60 000 which was taxed a whopping R22 000 that month.

I was advised by my tax agent that I only getting back R2200 this year as my basic is higher than my comm.
I queried the tax on the incentive but no answer as of yet.

Anyone with some advice?

Anyone know what this threshold amount is for supporting documents? Does it ever increase or decrease?
It sucks having to wait every year while everyone else it eating their returns already. And all that just because I know how to claim my taxes?

Doesn't seem fair...

there is no "threshold for supporting documents". if they ask you to submit documents then you submit them. as for the threshold regarding the audit done on one's refund - this can be anything really. usually it's R10k but if the system kicks out an audit for R5k then an audit must be done.

Well, just spoke to SARS call centre now to ask when my money will be transferred to me. Was getting a bit worried cause I changed my banking details when I submitted on E-Filing. I dealt with a extremely friendly lady who told me my new bank details have been accepted and money will be transferred tomorrow! Yay!

Please can someone help me? Im on my e-filing now, and there are 4 blocks, namely, Rerturn type, Supporting Documents, Notice of assesment and statement of account. On all of them it shows a - amount, but I dont know what the supporting documents mean? I have not had that block and stuff last year. The notice of assesment it says your assessment has been conducted and an amount is owing to me, but on the other one it says Im audited? What must I do now - it doesnt say anywhere what supporting documents I must give :( Does this mean I wont get paid now or what? Is the block for documents to be reviewed a standard norm, or is it on my thing because I must upload documents now? I didnt get any notices that I am under audit, but on the the one document it says a Y for audit? Please help!!! It also says status: assesment received.

i also got submitted for audit, i just scanned my Irp5 my med aid certificate, my annuity certificate etc... all the places you got the info from :) and then sent it through.

audit just means it is going to be "properly" checked before they pay you out.
