The worrying factor is that there is no end to this it just gets worse, there is too much respect towards taxi's and their associations it frightens me to even reprimand them cause all they understand is war and fighting.

Stuff that for a joke.. I reprimand them, I swear at them, I block them.. I don't care...

Rules of the road apply to all. I've even given a Metro cop lip before for ignoring a taxi doing illegal things on the road.

had 4 taxis cut in front of me this morning, across yellow island and barrier, all within sight of the metro and they did nothing ... could see more taxis doing the same to other cars behind me, metro still on breakfast break :)

I told a taxi driver off for skipping a red light and cutting me off, nearly causing an accident. He stopped and two of his male passengers started threatening me, one hanging out of the passenger window and another rolled the door open. I tried to reverse back to create space so I could get around him and the taxi behind me moved forward to block me. A third taxi skipped through the red light the first taxi skipped and stopped on my right. What do you think was going to happen to me if I escalated?

And this isn't a first. A sales rep that calls on my dad was assaulted in a similar fashion. He had a swearing match with a taxi that cut him off. Further down the road he was boxed in by two taxis, pulled out of his car and beaten up.

These guys are lawless thugs and bullies and I for one feel nothing if and when they get their comeuppance.

Yeah. Good luck with that. Been trying for the past 2-3 years. There is a moratorium on getting new reservists, was supposed to change sometime in this year, but haven't seen anything that it has.

If you do come right, please let me know as well.

Am I being pessimistic or are things going South in South Africa?

Edit: Spoke to a school friend in Canada last night. And he found it insane that one of the primary reasons we got dogs is for protection. We are getting so used to the crazy we take it as normal.

Edit Edit: Don't start a fight with a taxi driver. They don't value life. Either that or they don't possess the insight to visualize the pleasantries of jail. Perhaps jail is pleasant for them, who knows?

I block them. Turn my music up and just ignore them when they start threatening me.

The main reason I get a dog is for companionship.. the protection aspect is very secondary to that tbh.

I will fight with a Taxi Driver no problem... most of the altercations I've had with them end up with them backing down very quickly when they figure out i'm not just mouthing off and am about to get out of my car and smack them.

Advice from a friend. Always drive with a 9-iron in your car. If you quickly want to practice at the driving range before or after work. ;)

Just happened in PE (Kempston Road, opposite Mercantile Hospital)....

Taxi rode into a car and another taxi and tried to drive off. Driver of car caught up with him. Taxi driver threatened him, but picked on the wrong person. Luckily for him the hospital is across the road.

When I went down to Cape town this holiday, I had the pleasure of driving behind a slow and miserable looking taxi. Unfortunately this was late at night through the garden route, so I couldn't really do anything except wait for the lane to become a double lane to over take him. Wouldn't you know it, he blocks me off from passing at the double lanes and in return I hoot at him.

He slammed his brakes and so did I, not knowing WTF was going to happen. When we got to a complete stop (heart racing out of my chest), 8 occupants climbed out of the taxi looking ready to cause damage.

With the adrenaline pumping and thinking that this is how I die, I deciding to rip open my car door and climb out to face my foes.

I hardly took two steps before they tucked tail and climbed back in to the taxi, speeding off with screeching tires.

I forgot to take off my seat belt...

Many people are worried that the passengers will jump out to assist the driver when an altercation occurs. The truth is they want to stay as un-involved as other drivers on the road and will most likely get out and out of the way. If it is only the driver in the taxi he will chicken out 99% of the time if you confront him and speed off. If he chooses to stand his ground, pepper spray with a 5m stream reach and a kick in the face/balls/ribs/etc of the driver chooses to attack rather than flee. Get back in your car and casually drive on.

The only problem is other taxi drivers who might stop to assist their comrade.. Also, most of the altercations I witness involve a white guy so people will very quickly cry RACIST.

Eyewitness ropert:
I was a witness and what you saw was a guy trying to run away when his taxi came to a stop. He was putting on a act so the cops wouldn't take him to jail. He went through a red robots in Kempston Rd and hit the car and drove away he then went through more red robots to try and get away from the driver of the car. He then rode into the back of another taxi trying to get away. He tried to drive over the pavement into on coming traffic where he was blocked by two cars and tried to reverse back over the pavement when the guy in the car caught up to him. He tried to run away because he has no lisence. I wonder how you would react if he jumped a robots and drove into your car with your kids in it and drove away. What about all the passengers in the taxi he hit and tried to drive away? Now do you still feel sorry for him?

Motorists pull guns on each other every day on the road - and even shoot and kill each other... I'm more worried about that...

One thing at a time. Road rage incidents are relatively infrequent compared to the thuggish behaviour of taxi drivers...
