ID slates techno-free World Cup

It was a "disgrace" that the world football body Fifa was not using video technology to assist referees officiating during World Cup games, the Independent Democrats said on Wednesday.

If you dont like the rules, dont play the sport. Human error is part of the game... I dont see fifa brining in Tech for offsides as it will completely kill the "play to the whistle" spirit of soccer. I do understand why goal line tech would be cool, but then it has to be uniform all around the world. All the tech in the balls would need to be the same (and there are many soccer ball manufacturers) , and all balls would need to be tested before each game, and probably at half time as well.

lol love how politicians think that their opinion matters to Fifa...

I seriously wonder what FIFA soccer rules has to do with the ID. Maybe they trying to stay relevant? I mean the World Cup is going exceptionally well and they do have trouble finding things to bicker about. Maybe they should tear down the walls around stadium toilets?

the ID's opinion doesnt even count for much in this country, let alone to the world and FIFA. That said, I do think that soccer should also enjoy technology that could help it improve. For instance, goals are in short supply in this world cup. To be eliminated becuase of a bad decision stinks. However, England played so poorly in the group stages, so I dont understand the bitterness. That goal would not have changed the result. Even Bafana Bafana would have walk over them.

If it wasn't for Bloater and his minions S.A wouldn't be hosting this WC so perhaps they should avoid this issue.

This is the year 2010... the first decade of the twenty first century is nearly over. We have had public television for nearly 70 years. Surely FIFA can join us in the twenty first century? I agree with the ID... it is a disgrace and has spoiled the world cup for a lot of fans.

For many of us this has been a great introduction to the world of soccer. This is the first time that many people have watched a full game or watched their own national team. And what do they find? An archaic and buggy system of refereeing that is out of the 1800s.

Seriously... just give the ref an earpiece and let him communicate with another ref off the pitch who is watching the screens.

If you wanna keep the game "classic" then let the players play barefoot with a pigskin ball.

Haha. Sport + Technology is just better. Time for wendyball to join the party.

Also, one HUGE thing poofball needs is a citing system. After a game, players must be cited for foul play, especially for diving! This works in rugby and I see no reason why it won't work in oikball.

Time for roundball to get a makeover. The game is broken. That's why I don't watch it.

I have to agree, any one who thinks technology is a no no for the sport cant be correct. Human errors happen, thats why they need to implement these solutions, so that there is no human errors and can be enjoyed FAIRLY by all.

Hehe. Love your various descriptions of the game in your post there. :D

This is what I've been saying too. Sure, don't halt the game if it's going to botch the flow but have some credible chappie watching the coverage and taking down names when the girly stuff happens. Then after the game, or maybe even at half time, Mr. Credible Chappie can then go and point out who gets to miss out on the next three games or whatever is decided.

You bitch about it quite a bit though! :p

It's funny how the biggest noise for technology in soccer comes from non-soccer fans. Oh, and teams who can't even put their balls in the back of the net properly... :D

I think you may be right about that. I sure don't watch this game other than a handful of times during one month every four years and the number one reason for that is I can't believe the lows some of these players will go to to get their team a win. I mean, are the supporters actually meant to be proud or what?

A game played by gentleman and watched by hooligans. But the acting that happens on the field reminds me of WWF ;)

So blame the managers. Players are encouraged to waste as much time as possible if they're fouled in order to give everyone a breather and a chance to regroup. It's part of the strategy... ;-)

One of the biggest reasons I don't watch football is the diving and the pathetic overacting... drives me absolutely NUTS.

So i would def support a citing system which sees players punished for acting like idiots on the field

I'd like to see the same thing happen to rugby players who run straight into a clump of the opposition as soon as they get the ball.

Go AROUND, dumbass... ;-)
