Which skills sets are people looking for, a breakdown of the skill sets would be helpful, anyone with links.
Yes, This is the same old story different date and viewpoint. They say oh no, we need people, but they aren't doing anything about it.
firstly I would also like to see what skills are lacking the most, this could impact future decisions and further skills development on my part and from students and young people's point of view, who want to enter the work force, they will be able to plan what they would like to study.
IT is very very broad, if they say there is a shortage in IT they could just as well be saying there is a shortage of skilled workers period.
Next the science and maths thing, I don't even know what to say, I think our students and school kids have too much of a choice, make them do maths and science, add an extra level like functional, which is below STD Grade, but for heavens sake make them do it, too difficult, too much work my word, you are in school to learn not to play games and cock about... The new curriculum is already messing up university entry procedures, I hear there is no more M-score or percentages in school, don't know if this is correct, but if it is, how the hell do you admit someone into a tertiary institution, how do you determine if they can study, I had to work my ass off in std10 to get high enough marks to be able to study....
All of this is having an impact and someone needs to step in and rethink allot of things...
On the bursary issue, "Pale male" jumps to mind, however you don't need to get a bursary from the state alone, and to be frank as it was mentioned it is really hard with all the BEE and AA. There are NGO's and private companies who provide post graduate bursaries some universities even provide bursaries if you do research in a specific subject, because they receive more funding for the amount of postgraduate students they have enrolled. Best bet would be to ask your current employer to arrange some sort of bursary, if you don't have a job already get one, I think experience counts a hell of a lot more than post graduate study...
I agree with the statement that there is a huge gap between university trained people and the first or second year of experience in some disciplines it is huge, you study things from a book, put in a cram session before the exam and pass with a mark of just > 50% then you get the paper and start working, you then realise that you know nothing about the real working world and that most of the subjects were totally useless, but you got the degree or diploma...
From the in house training and experience I received from my current job, I have learned 10 times more than I did in university...
I am also considering a move to greener pastures, over seas, an I will become yet another tick on the "Brain Drain" statistic, but not so much because of my job or not finding work, because there are lots of jobs out there, you must look for that ideal job. No I am leaving because of crime, our government and it's policies, the way in which the government acts disbanding the scorpions, the arms deal, I feel so alone! Can nobody else see what is going on with this corrupt state?!?

not to mention our next presidents ethical track record and the current governments indecision on major economical and social issues, "xenophobia" BS it's just violence and that's it it won't be long before it spreads over to other SA citizens, I am glad in a way that the xenophobia bug has bitten international media, so that the rest of the world can see what is going on here, Hijackings, rape murder and farm killings don't receive any international attention, but it happens every day, 50 odd foreigners get killed and the whole world is watching but hundreds of citizens are victims of crime and a blind eye is given. I am obviously not condoning the violence against foreigners, nor am I belittling the deaths of the people who were killed in the attacks. The naive stance by the people living here is what gets me the most....
Anyway end of rant, sorry for straying off topic, but this also accounts for the major skills shortage, because the little skilled people we have are leaving.
