Telecoms infrastructure takes off

Any idea why the Cellular networks are NOT going for the UMTS on 900Mhz solution?

Most likely saturation of the other bands, as well as QoS for voice provision and UMTS will be the natural replacement for 3G networks in future.

I'm just happy to hear mtn will be upgrading their network...

I forgot a verrry important word in my post...:o

how exciting. In 2 years time, we'll have the type of connections the developed world had 5 years ago

if they pumping millions into the infrastructure why am i waiting for almost 4 months now for a line? o also been told they leaving it for next year.

Lol. UMTS IS 3G...

And the bandwidth available in the 900MHz band is probably quite limited... (The 900Mhz UMTS band is exactly the same as the GSM band and has 35 MHz each for upload and download... Dividing this between 5 operators, (Neotel, Telkom, Cell C, Vodacom and MTN) and you get 7MHz each. Substract from that whatever is used for GSM, and you get the picture... With a Signal-to-noise ratio of 20dB (power ratio of 100), you can get a maximum of 46 Mbit per cell (before overhead, assuming perfect error correction and no GSM), shared between all the users in the cell)

After receiving the line you're waiting for, you'll then have to wait longer as they upgrade your exchange as it most likely only supports 512k.
*sigh* When will they actually get their act together?
