Telefunken 42" plasma

How can you recommend the PS42C450 over a Full HD TV? The Samsung has a resolution of 1024x768 (Barely HD Ready) compared to 1920x1080 for the Full HD Telefunken. If you want to watch HD movies and play games in HD, AND get the full effect, I'd strongly suggest the Telefunken over the barely HD-ready Samsung.

Think about this:
SD TV has a resolution of 704×576 (405504 pixels)
The Samsung has a resolution of 1024x768 (786432 pixels [~94% more than SD])
The Full HD Telefunken has a resolution of 1920x1080 (2073600 pixels [~164% more than the Samsung, and ~411% more than SD])

Given that the Full HD set is cheaper, I would strongly recommend you go for it over the vastly inferior Samsung. The best piece of advice would be to go to a shop where they have both sets side-by-side, ask them to play an HD feed on both sets, and make up your mind based on the quality you see. That way you'll KNOW you're getting the best deal.

A non-issue to me from the start. It's never bugged me for even a second. Yet, some people can't handle it. I had more of a shock and worry, when i had IR on my LCD. Granted, it vanished just as quick as my plasma, BUT IR on a LCD! You don't expect that.

In his defence, he was probably referring to the amount of pixels; lesser being "vastly inferior".

But ya, he sounds like a clever bloke with his calculations etc. but doesn't seem to know much about TVs.

Because the Samsung will have better internal components, image processing engines, etc.

Don't get LCD though. It doesn't suit your needs. Get plasma, Samsung PS42C430/C450. C450 has extra HDMI, anti-reflection coating, FM tuner, USB media player.

You can't go wrong. The amount of MyBb forumites who have bought these sets over the last 3 months (about 20) is testament to this fact.

Would I be able to notice the effect of the internal components (ie if I compare the two side-by-side), or is it merely a subjective measure of quality? Knowing that so often the effects of more expensive components in electronics are difficult to appreciate...

The price is also quite a big concern for me - I'd want the C450 Sammy, but it looks like it will be more in the range of R6-7k Where should I look for the best prices (Cape Town)?

Oh, and there are definitely 42" plasma sets that run 1920x1080

Yup, better image processing engines etc. = better image quality and longevity. Especially noticeable with SD stuff. And a lot of sport is SD.

Audiovision and Tafelberg do the C450 I think. Game and Makro seem to focus on the C430. The C450 is worth the extra $. Better menu too.

Yeah, there is definitely a plus over the LCD with Hz.

I also get minimal IR, gone within seconds of either a cut scene or changing channels. It is seriously a non issue for me anymore.

I guess you would be right.
For me, i am a Fifa fanboi, but i sit 1m from the TV (maybe its my eyesight or the fact that i am left eyed and left brained - result is takes longer for me to react). And 1m from TV, the LCD is better.
Other games where the 'ball' is not so small i dont have to sit close.

So, I decided to go for the 42" Sammy - the C431. Tafelberg had it on sale for R4899, and I wasn't prepared to spend the extra $ going for the C450 at R6499.

I got home and connected my PC. Utter disappointment - the max resolution of the display is 1024x768! So, in order to display even a 720p signal, the display has to interpolate... I am now considering taking it back and exchanging it for a Sony 40" LCD that they had on sale at the same time (getting fed up with this idea of an HD Ready plasma that can't even really do 720p).

Otherwise, when the room is dark, the picture quality (read sharpness and colour) has been beautifully to my liking. Unfortunately, glare is more of a problem than I imagined, so will have to look at alternative places to put my TV.

If anyone has the C430/450 (or any other 1024x768 plasma panel), could you tell me how it interprets the signal from the HD PVR decoder? ie Does it represent the signal on the TV as a true 16:9 image, or is it stretched and deformed, or does it have to be viewed in "WIDE" mode or "WIDE ZOOM" mode?

Anything anyone wants to add or comment on would be cool...

Amazing price. !

The PS42C4xx is a 16:9 wide screen HD Ready TV. Don't worry about the resolution! The pixels are rectangular.

HD PVR displays at 720p.

If you want to hook up a PC, and use it for "normal PC use" then a full HD set will be a better choice. For HD TV (DSTV), that plasma will be great... and for DVD, HD moves - great... but not for a PC monitor.

Plasma is not for PC use, period. Sure, gaming and movies/series are 100% fine, but not working in Windows/Linux/what ever with static Start bars, windows, etc.
