I feel the same because to, half a gig is no big deal, but for an extra R44 its nice to have as a safety net to have I think and its also nice for people starting out with the internet or older folk who just want to use it for emails etc. I know a lot of people who only do online banking and use email and everymonth they have at least 2gigs left over which they have to give away.

Could you please add to this comparison and future ones, an entry for a comparable country's ADSL product--or as close as possible to comparable product--I guess this would be difficult especially with uncapped products.

By including another country's product/s it will at least give everyone an idea of how far South Africa supposed broadband products lag.

Which still leaves the DoBroadband 3 faring quite well, but the others looking even more horrendously overpriced. The 4Mbps speed is the major factor here-how reliable a speed is that compared to the 1.8 offered by other providers? Would the picture still be the same if average true speeds were compared?

I would also like to know what max throughput speeds are on the HSDPA 1.8mb/s (Sustainable max speeds). I highly doubt that it is anywhere near the theoretical throughput of 220KB/s. I know that I get about 420KB/s sustained max speed on my 4meg line.

I guess it really just makes it harder to compare products when average speeds can't be compared.

We are also only comparing low usage caps (3gigs). If you had to say go for 10gig caps the HSDPA products are a mute point. They are through the roof expensive.

Yeah when I got off the phone with 10219 yesterday I got a bit annoyed and asked the lady why are our DSL products so horrendously overpriced compared to the rest of the globe and she blatently just stopped me in my tracks and said that everything comes from ICASA and government and that Telkom is actually trying to service the customer as best they can. Oh how I wish I could actually believe that. With people like Hayward there it shows that they don't care enough to have someone there that actually understands our needs and tries to accommodate us. Really now this is getting ridiculous to the point where we all know SA could be a MAJOR player in the global market but its ridiculous small childish expensive packages like this that make us even fall further behind. We need Neotel to just come in and give us multi Mbps products at around 250pm with a large cap or uncapped. How long can this crap continue? Oh and the R100 MUST be included in the costs since its MANDATORY like someone above said, how can you leave out that charge and still do comparisons. *shakes head*

Why exclude the R100, it is clearly part of the charges, without it you are not connected so it forms part of the connection charges.

On the surface Cost/Gb/Mbps is a reasonable methodology, but I wonder if users actually rate speed on a par with cap.

Offer to double speed or double the cap, and most users would go for the cap.

For comparing uncapped products it works because higher speed translates automatically into more Gbs. So you are getting double the Gb's with double the speed.

In a capped environment, it simply means you can reach your cap so much quicker. The value of greater speed, therefore, is highly diminished.

Vodacom and MTN have no differential pricing for HSDPA, 3G, EDGE or GPRS. They charge solely by the Gb. IBUrst and Sentech are one speed services. Only ADSL has price differentials for speed.

But you cannot ignore speed completely either. I just think its weighting in the comparison needs to be vastly reduced when looking at capped products.

Yes, that is an excellent article.

What I would like to see now are those example costs of other countries, in this article's table because it makes for such easy reading--the table format--for everyone to easily see how far SA lags.

On the face of it, this almost looks a good proposal. Until one actually sees that the line rental is excluded and you are stuck with TI.

It's just more of the same bullsh1t from the monopoly.

They make a pretty site, fiddle with the pricing, blatantly lie by leaving out the line rental which is obligatory and, bob's your uncle, more people who don't know any better go out and snap it up.

You're right - but as things stand, I'd rather take the 384K option and be able to have broadband, than have them offer only the 512 or higher options at an even more unreasonable price.

Deduct previous telephone usage of average R700 per month and you have 4096 ADSL at R236 per month including everything!

Get real, cut the national sport of Telscum bashing, and admit that the jolly blue giant is abusing its position as the only viable DSL provider, to give some of us a cost-effective service.

I enjoy my service at the price I am getting.

For other ISPs to compete with this is not possible.

The pricing structure in objective international terms is ammorally rapacious.

I am now getting a good deal. I look forward to getting a better deal as "expected competition" takes effect.

Take the best deal that you can at any one time. This is the way that the logical and financial wind blows.

Morality, rights and wrongs, ethics, these have nothing whatsoever with the condition of the back pocket.

Say what you like, and galling as it may be to many, you have to admit that Do Closer Level 3 in my particular circumstantces cannot be beaten.

Dude if you have ever lived in another country or seen what they pay for real broadband, you'll be sick to your stomach knowing that you're forking out that amount of money just to have decent internet access. Once we have unlimited ADSL at speeds of more than 1Mbps (minimum) and installation time of 1 week or less none of us are gonna be happy.

Feo, I agree with what you say, but simply put, compared to the R1400 to R1500 that I was paying per month, R936 is a real and uncontradictable saving to me.
