Telkom’s huge fixed-line headache

They lost nothing.

They just plain refuse to install new landlines and/or provide broadband, instead new users are told they either need to get a wireless phone from Telkom/8ta or move to a mobile services provider.

This is why they see a decline in subscribers, they are just forcefully moved to their mobile division.

I can tell you why.
**** service takes weeks to get a line fixed .
Tech just close calls without fixing the problem.

I will gladly take another line, but the twats seem unable to install 2 lines at my house. FFS

I had the exact same problem. Their excuse was that there was trees in the way... But the current line running through 3 trees is fine???

This is expected, no? Copper voice lines are no longer the only option available.

Also, why is this a called a "headache"?

This. Telkom clearly plans to completely get rid of their landline business. Everything they do points towards this. It almost seems like they can't get rid of landlines fast enough.

Jack up service, offer competitive prices for the performance and they could turn that trend around. Instead, they have an asset which its pretty much paid up, and they choose not to milk it

It's not competition that's driving the decline though. Telkom is actively stopping the installation of copper lines in many areas. The decline is through their own deliberate actions.

Cheap naked ADSL with very cheap data for students, poor and aged would benefit SA eg. 1mbps and 2gb data plus rental for R50 pm. Times this by a few million potential customers....
I have prepaid line and wanted ADSL. I was told to convert to voice line at nearly R200pm to get ADSL. What a ripoff and disgrace. For R200, I buy cheap mobile data.
BTW...I have two lines already installed. What a waste

Those must be the biggest trees in the world if they can't thread a 2-pair copper wire past them.

Sounds like my story....
After eventually getting a 2nd line they now seem unable to get both to work at the same time.
I am convinced they simply swap the two lines around when I log a fault .

Pretty much. My line has been getting progressively worse the last 2 years. Calls get closed without anyone pitching up to physically check the line. They just couldn't be bothered.

The total fixed-line traffic also showed a drastic decline – from 8.4 billion minutes in September 2014 to 7.6 billion minutes in September 2015.

^THIS is the real story. The headline has drawn attention away from the real problem...

This is to be expected an planned imho, it's no secret Telkom is phasing out it's landline business and focusing more on mobile and fiber, a lot of those declines are actually just being moved to Telkom mobile.

Friends of mine working for Telkom have also told me this countless times, so I don't think this is a headache for them as it's planned.

Yep, I tried to get a line about a year ago, but they said that there is a waiting list of over 400 people in my area. So I just got an LTE modem and use the 10GB+10GB for R199. Works out cheaper and I have no reason to consider ADSL again. Latency is low and solid with fast speeds.
