Hi Guys.

I wonder if you guys can give me some advise. Firstly, let me tell you. As someone in the IT field, living in an area that didnt have an ADSL enabled exchanged was really depressing. Finally after YEARS of enquiries my checked last week and to my joy, "Your exchange is available for ADSL up to 4mb".

So the first thing I do is search around for good ISP's. I phone telkom to get a line installed and they tell me about the "1mb Uncapped" deal. Okay, i go for it, and after reading the fine print i see they throttle the network, which is perfectly fine. But they do say no throttling after 10pm. Now here's my problem. Max 400kbs at all times of the day!! I understand that everyone is going for this deal and its gonna be bit slow. But thats less than half, and my area as just been enabled for ADSL so its not like there is alot of users in my area.

Now before you go on about "Dont complain, its Free". There are other people on here not having anyproblems.
I just want to know.Should i call to enquire, and more importanly, when the trial is over and i start paying for my adsl, is this the type of speeds i should expect??

Any [Useful] advise would be appreciated. Im posting this now [10:32PM] and cant even watch YouTube. Speedtest screenie attached.

Yeah, thanks mate. I read that thread. All it shows of how some users are happy and others are struggling.I dont want to give feedback, I am asking for advise to my situation. I want to know if there is something that i can do to fix it or just except it. My main issue is if i decide to carry on or move to another isp, is this the kind of speeds i should expect. Im even considering getting a 4mb account because im not happy with this this speeds. But the way it seems this is not 1mb speeds, so there is obviously a problem.

Not a dumb question mate, if you are talking about to check what speeds you line can handle, yes, it stated 4mbps.

However i dont know about this verify, and the link you posted doesnt work. doing i quick google search i also get this url : www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl which also doesnt work. Any other way i can do this verify?

Thanks though...

Have you checked at what speed the router sync and what are the Line Attenuation values?

Here is my modem stats.

Modem Status
Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 512
Ds Rate (Kbps) 1024
US Margin 13
DS Margin 31
Trained Modulation ADSL_G.dmt
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 16
US Line Attenuation 9
Peak Cell Rate 1207 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 0
CRC Tx Fast 31
CRC Rx Interleaved 0
CRC Tx Interleaved 0
Path Mode Fast Path

On the 3 month capped offering. Speed rarely exceeds 103kbs. Sometimes spikes to 135kbs for a little while.

103kB/s = 824 kbps. For a 1 Mbps line that sounds about right.

1Mbps = 1024 kbps = 128 KB/s

Update: After numerous LONG ASS calls, and them telling me to restart my modem. I finally speak to someone who tells me they can see there is a problem with my line, and a technician has been assigned to resolve the issue.

Lets wait and see...

Yo

I had the same problem recently. Applied for the 3 month trial and my speeds were exactly the same as yours. After numerous phone calls and them telling me that my line is fine, I checked the form I received from Telkom containing my username and password and guess what? It said 'Product details: TI DO Uncapped BASIC'. I was so eager to get home and try out my brand spanking new Internet connection that I hardly even looked at the piece of paper when I got it. However, I don't get how someone can be so incompetent signing me up for a 384Kbps package when I explicitly asked for the TRIAL which all Telkom employees should know by now is meant to be 'Uncapped Advanced'. So eventually after visiting one of their branches and having them cancel the Basic package and signing me up for the Advanced instead, I am now more than happy with my speeds :)

I would suggest going into a branch and have them check what package you're on.

Cheers

Firstly, and this might seem quiet dumb, but have you verified the line yet?
Just a suggestion...

You cannot access SpeedTest.net (or any other website excl. the Telkom site) when your line is not verified yet afaik.

On the 3 month capped offering. Speed rarely exceeds 103kbs. Sometimes spikes to 135kbs for a little while.

That is spot on for a 1Mbps line. The 103, not the 135. A 1024kbps line cannot do 135KB/s. What happens is, usually, some program (like your virus software) might hold up the incoming data streams and when they are 'released' your software just sees a sudden increase in incoming traffic and reports it as such. Eg. Click on a download link using firefox but pause a few minutes before you tell it where to save the file. Once you click save, firefox will initially report a higher downloading speed and then gradually climb to the actual download speed (the download was started in the background the moment you clicked on the link).

I would suggest going into a branch and have them check what package you're on.
Cheers

If they had him on the 384kbps package I do not see how he would be able to upload at 430kbps though.

I'd suggest that they rather check that he is on the correct profile to begin with and do a port recreate. If that fails, then I'd blame line noise or a bad line/dsl card.

Another update: After Telkom telling me that its fixed, i saw no change in the speeds. So one night, after not being able to stream a youtube video, i bought a 1GB Prepaid from webafrica. My download speeds went from 20-30KB/s to +-110KB/s... Ja Telkom.

So i go to a telkom direct store, to see the lady who initially "helped" me with my speed problem. I told her about my discovery, thinking that it would help them figure out whats wrong. SHE TELLS ME: "Well, you can use up the rest of your Unbcapped trial period. Then you can cancel your account with us, and sign up with them"

Speechless... Keep your free KAK Speeds!! Im changing ISP's

Just a note.

You advise someone by giving them advice. You ask an advisor for advice.

It is way too throttled during the day. I would rather opt for a package from web Africa or mweb. I much prefer shaping to throttling. The who cares if torrents are slow during the day I want my browsing to be smooth.

WHAT WHAT WHAT? UNCAPPED RUNS SLOWER THAN CAPPED!?

SHOCK AND OUTRAGE!

Seriously guys. How do you think ISPs are going to make money on uncapped accounts if the price on average of a capped account is R15-R30 per gig? Yes, they will shape you to hell and back. It's the main reason why I've stuck with capped accounts. 500-600kpbs downloads at almost any time of day.

Local isn't throttled.
