Telkom Adsl checker

I think the Mweb 6Mbps package was meant for people who wanted more than 4 but couldn't get their 10Mbps line to sync above 6, so essentially, you would be paying line rental for 10, and data only capable of hitting 6.

If you upgrade your line to 4 with Telkom, you can drop your Mweb data to 4, or you need to upgrade to 10 with Telkom (until Telkom eventually offer 8) and leave your data as is with Mweb.

What are your actual data needs and usage requirements?

Well I game a lot and also download games of around 35-60 gb. I stream movies and series and also the usual browsing, email and what not.

I think you made a mistake here then.

I dont see a mistake there. When I use the checker it says the maximum speed available in my area is 20 Mbps and the speed I have subscribed to is 2 Mbps.

Check page 2 of your Telkom invoice under Subscription Services to see what speed you are paying for:

DSL Fast - up to 2Mbps
DSL Faster - up to 4Mbps
DSL Fastest - up to 10Mbps

It is DSL Fast... I love the irony of calling 2 Mbps fast

Would it be better if I just moved my dsl line to mweb. Maybe then they will tell me what I'm doing wrong and assist me in getting the right package.

No.

Never move your line to your ISP.

If you want 4meg, call Telkom and ask them to Upgrade you to 4meg. if they can, keep your 6meg Mweb account because it sounds like you need the higher threshold.

If you can't get 4Meg, and have to stay on 2meg, then call MWEB and tell them to downgrade your account to 4meg.

You said the checker told you 2Mbps.
I even linked your post above.

What do you mean by higher threshold

But it did say that my speed is 2 Mbps.

Why are you arguing the exact semantics you posted?
I was merely trying to understand why you were trying to get 20Mb when you clearly stated the line checker said you were capable of 2.

If your line is capable of 20Mb then what is this discussion even about?
Call Telkom and ask them what speed your line is capable of syncing it.

I apologize if I have misunderstood you but the main reason I started this thread was to find out what exactly the telkom Adsl checker showed you. I realize now that it shows you the dsl line that you have subscribed to. Eg. Fast - 2mbps which is what I have

I now know that in order for me to achieve the 6 Mbps that I am paying MWEB for I need to upgrade the telkom dsl line to Fastest - 10mbps.

I did not know what the Adsl checker was showing me therefore I asked.

Once again I apologize, Electric.

But now I'm confused again.
When I check the ADSL line Checker it says I can get 40Mb Copper even when I had 20Mb.
So it by rights should show what your line is capable of and not what you are currently subscribed to.

Which should mean you are only capable of achieving 2Mb.

Edit: no apology needed :)

I think it shows both. I recall it showing what I am subscribed to and what the max speed in my area is.

I just checked now and it says "Not available" in my area :wtf:

After talking to telkom it's confirmed that I can get up to 20 Mbps and all I have to do is upgrade my dsl line.

I'm subscribed to a 2 Mbps line but I can upgrade to something faster as long as it is under the max speed available in my area which for you would be 40 Mbps.

Yeh, I'm already on 40Mb.
It's you that needs the 20Mb upgrade now :D
Just check that your line is able to achieve a true 20Mb or it will be hellishly unstable.
Also decide between VDSL and ADSL +2.

I wish I could get the 20 Mbps but it's just too expensive.

Also does anybody know how long it would take for telkom to upgrade your dsl line?
