Telkom ADSL growth slows

Could it be that a 4meg line isn't guaranteed and the poor copper network is giving crap?
 
I would love to tap into that nice Fiber line next to my house...

Another thing is, Telkom has installed a new Copper cable but never fully installed it. Like an unconnected UTP cable hanging around.
 
Remove the compulsory voice line rental and they will see growth.
 
The idiots don't know the meaning of competition. They enjoyed a monopoly for years, and now they're slowly but surely starting to suffer.

Unfortunately they always come a little late to the party so in a few months we'll probably see them wake up and realise they need to do something to keep their market share.

I think the just of it... Telkom is extremely expensive... However it slows from September 2008 onwards. News about the recession started surfacing around November/December 2008 - and I think people have been shopping for cheaper alternatives or cutting down on what they don't need! and I think that is why we are seeing the decline on subscribers!

People have tighten their belts, Telkom would be wise to drastically cut costs to win over some customers!

I also think that we're not seeing the bigger picture here. I think if we had a comparison like this with the other players, we'll see a similar decline!

Cut the compulsory voice line bundling, ditch line rental (or cut it by 90%), and you'll see sales skyrocket.

It's amazing that so many folks can see what's hampering ADSL growth but that Telkom's top management refuses to do anything about it. If this is really the crown jewel in Telkom's retail basket then they must wake up and smell the roses before their crown jewel becomes their biggest nightmare!

Somewhere along the lines, pardon the pun, they have their costing and business models' wire crossed and are making some weird assumptions. The last rumours were that the pricing would stay the same but the product/service offerings would be increased/improved.

I would imagine that their primary thought is this: to drop the double line rental charge will see a revenue drop of R78,8mil per month or R946mil per year.

And that's where their thought processes stop..............

Has anyone constructed any planning models or forward predictions of what the POTENTIAL ADSl uptake might be :confused:

Should be able to work out your "bean-counter" figures from there.

Maybe I should go and scratch around in "WebFarm" again :erm::whistle:

( Perhaps it is best NOT to know -- saves on frustration --- one can only take so much :cry: )

Yes. Unfortunately the 2nd line rental in factored in.... What might wake them up is when their own 3G services takes off and ADSL growth becomes negative!

As it is, their own 3G = R219 for 1Gb and their own ADSL 1Gb = R131 + R199. HUH?
 
I would like to see mobile operators wireless Internet usage over the same period - wonder if Telkom is losing share or did the entire industry slow...
 
I have never cancelled my ADSL line but have reduced and increased speeds since 2002. I was the first adopter in Mayville, Pretoria. I have never had issues with speed and when the line went down it was usually fixed within the same day. It does help that the exchange is on my complex's corner :) .

Every time I switch from 4Mbps down to 384Kbps I find it so frustrating and rather use my 3G card during those periods and have the ADSL as backup line (I work from home in the mornings so that is why I need the backup). Currently back on 4 Mbps on Afrihost as general and Imaginet for pure unshapped saix gaming. I love the 4Mbps Adsl and can't wait to be upgraded to 8 Mbps.

Telkom needs to increase the minimum speed to 1 Mbps and drop the line rental portion. Then the uptake will increase. Telkom has damaged their image over the years and the other operators have a much better public perception.

Though wireless tech had good reliability the jitter and latency is just a big issue for me, when working remotely you clearly see the difference between ADSL and wireless and that will not change soon (I think). Telkom will always have a place unless iBurst can make their iDSL truely ADSL competitive!
 
Stop forcing you to pay the voice line rental if you don't want it. Increase minimum line speed to 1 mb/s and introduce a R100 for 1 gig including the adsl line rental starter bundle. They will make a killing...

Its almost 2010 and we only have a 5GB cap - that serious progress telkom!

Another 80 years and we will be at 30GB cap. :sick:
