This is Telkom's own fault. There are bucket loads of people that have applied for ADSL lines over the last 2 or 3 years that have not been able to get the service due to lack of infrustructure.

Time for the DO-People at Telkom to DO something about their DOtting pricing :erm:
I was going to get adsl for my flat but after finding out what I have to pay to get the lines activated, I won't be getting it anymore.
Telkom want R468 to activate the analog line in my flat.
Then they want another R598 to activate the adsl line.
I am not even going to use the analog line. I only want ADSL.
The technician will do both while he/she is there (I was assured), but with this excessive overpricing on a job that will take no more than 1 hour, I cannot let myself be completely and utterly taken for a ride.

How do you figure they will make a killing? According to the article there are 602 720 adsl subscribers. If they drop voice line rental and charge less than R100 for a 1mb/s line, they will lose R130 + more than R100 per customer per month=R230. So if they decrease your total telephone bill by only R230, for every ADSL subscriber that's R230 * 602720 = R138.6m per month they lose out on. They'd have to sign up R1.4m new customers on your proposed R100 package just to break even again, more than double their current subscriber base (which also means a lot more expenses)...
Those Telkom execs know what they are doing way better than you or me, they are looking at all this "competition" and smiling all the way to the bank because they know most of the traffic is still dependant on their network. Lowering prices will not benefit them in any way and I think we can forget about it. We can only pray for increased service levels.

Order a CLOSER package with free installation of analogue line, and ADSL self-install(free).

I agree. They're not stupid. They obviously know wot they're doing and smiling all the way to the bank.
Can you tell me more about this? I see it on the Telkom website and the only internet option I can find there is do broadband. The CLOSER option says 75 hours of browsing and I don't want that.
The DO broadband option (level 1) shows that I can do the install myself. Can I do this myself without taking up the DO ADSL contract with Telkom? Obviously I will pay the adsl rental each month but I want to use another ISP for my data. And by "installation" do they mean enter the username and password into the router?

Well, they could have increased their ADSL subscribers if the just wanted to install the infrastructure in my area, even Wimax would have been OK. But NO!!!!
So Telkom, DO NOT complain about market shares and so on if you do not even offer the service!!!!

I think that Telkom's customer base is serisouly eroding and that they have adsl technicians standing around with nothing to do. I applied for an ADSL line TWO days ago, asking them to install it on the 6th of Jan 2010 after I have moved into my new house. I got a call a few minutes ago from the technician. He is outside the house and wanting to install the line. I appreciate the speedy service, but I think its speedy cause there are'nt many installations happening

Anyone find that just wrong? They launched a service 7 years ago that are faster and had more cap [initially] than the services they sell NOW.
I mean their Do packages do not even have a 512 option. It's either 384 or 4mbits. Hellooo. Alot of people just want to get "some" internet, so they settle for 384 . (Yes i know if you dig around you find the 512 option, but it's clearly not part of Telkom's "popular product lineup")
So effectively Telkom has put this country in REVERSE. Next they will launch a 128kbps service that are cheaper and people will take it because well, it is cheaper.
Soon we'll be back to dial-up in callmore time.

Order the closer package get your line installed then cancel the closer package, which will get the line installed for nothing. After that order adsl and ask for self install which is free.

Yea, and why are they even selling 384 to begin with? They should be selling 512 as the "cheaper" option, not 384. And yes Telkom inflated the 512 pricing so that you "might as well" get the 4mbits, but that is Telkom creating an artificial barrier resulting in everyone opting for the even slower 384 speed.
Or get the WUG and use 3G for something like banking or other normal web browsing sites
Then they can keep on claiming that the average user only needs 500mb a month.

Telkom knows they are backed by Guavamint & will probably be bailed out with taxpayers money if it comes to that. Competition my ass, their fixed-line monopoly is still in place. No need to compete = no need to improve.
