If you have a pre-existing analogue telephone line, then continue to do your self-install and IMO don't let the technician into your house since he is merely trying to unethically get a cut out of the exorbitant R437.50 nonsense fee.

Why Mweb

I ordered my home dsl 512 line on Friday( doing the self install) and was told it would take Telscum 6 - 8 weeks to enable the exchange. Or more precisily not to bother them till then.

Just want to know how long did it take you guys in the Pretoria area for them to enable your exchange??

I already have my d-link router and pots filters. And getting mweb to change my account from a dialup to a adsl account shouldn't take long. But I have to wait for telscum.

hey i hope u get connected soon! but im with mweb and im stuck with them because of my dads email address    so do you have to be with mweb cause they are rip offs??

cheers matt

I have been connected for about 11 days now. should have been earlier but telkom took 5 days to let me know they converted the line. I am in the same position had to take mweb cause of my dad's email address. Could have gotten a saol 5 gig account for the same price instead we have to use mweb's 3 gig one.

Applied on 24th Aug.
Called today (4th Sep), told me they were testing the line this morning and will contact me ASAP. They were busy with some Project(??) in Rosebank Area and my installation scheduled complete on/before 18 Sep...........

Self install

Hi guys

If you have installed a dial-up modem before, your really should be opting for the self install. :)

For those who opt for self install, leave your router plugged into the line, and wait for the link (DSLAM) light to come on. Then you wioll know when they have patched u on the exchange side.

To check online there is:
http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl

It saves a 15min on hold call, but.. it takes 10 min to give you a reply anyway! Hmm...

Have fun everyone!

I should have get a modem myself then wait for telkom to deliver my MACORNI.........

well I'm all installed, so u guys are saying I might get a signal on the 8th instead of the 15th?
Well sure hope so~ Cant wait cant wait!

But right now I dont see the ASDL led or the PnPo(however u spell it :p) LEd on, which is correct right?

So one day, hopefully the 8th, it should come on...

yeah self install seems to be the way, can't believe that they would charge so much just to plug 2 filters in! I was scheduled to have my exchange enabled on the 11th,but was up and running yesterday (6th...)

ADSL Self Instalation

I did my aplication on 25/08/06 and got a call on 06/09/06 to say the conversion had been done so plugged in the modem and I am now connected, I think the self instalation package is a great idea and it saved me R404.00 on the instalation

Grrr....
I hate this, i applied for a self-installation and i got the modem and everything, got really excited, so i've already plugged it in and stuff, but now i have to wait for them to enable my line....

They said they would be done by now, but guess what...i'm still waiting (go figure);)

This is just gettin really...really annoying:D

Step 1 phone Telkom
Step 2 Be told by Telkom Self install not available
Step 3 Wait like everyone else for telkom to install
Step 4 get charged install fee when you could have done it yourself at the start

:D

On a lighter note.. Search the forum there is a couple of posts regarding self install.

Call telkom, Order ADSL and request a self install, Every time to call you will have to tell them you have chosen the self install option. Next go to the telkom office and purchase a few POTS Filters (+/- R40 each), Connect the filters to the phones. Then after a few months Telkom will caall you to say that it's activated, check you router to see if it sych's, if it does eneter your username and password and you connected. Oh, when you receive the bill after the install is complete call telkom to claim back the installion charge, because even if you tell telkom a 100 times that it's a self install they'll still charge.

Go figure, that doesn’t surprise me in the least, incompetent bunch at Telkom!

I haven't been phoned by Telkom yet. I just waited till the little ADSL light on the modem came on.

My fax to Telkom to cancel my ADSL installation because they have just been poor in communicating what's going on and generally are not able to provide good customer service. Telkom is NOT the only provider of broadband :-) The way it goes below should be familiar to many...

Dear Wilma

I applied for ADSL on 5 October 2006. I want to cancel the application please, as well as the application for TelkomInternet powered by ADSL (3 GB at 512 kbps).

The order number to be cancelled is: ………. for phone number …………. Please confirm the cancellation.

The reason for my cancellation is that I have had a query that was not handled to my satisfaction. Nobody ever called me back even after promising to do so. I was given conflicting information by various parties on numerous issues (expected installation procedures, sequences of events, some cite 4-6 weeks, others 6-8 weeks, 11 days, 28 days, etc.). I have been on the phone with Telkom for hours, most of those hours spent waiting for someone to pick up the phone (typically 15 to 20 minutes).

Important is that a Telkom technician originally called me to make a booking for installation on the 30th of October. I thought: cool – less than 4 weeks to get ADSL! Way to go, Telkom! I opted for the self-install and the technician assured me that, before the 30th my ADSL link should be activated on the network. I worked on this information. Only three weeks after the technician’s call do I now find out that the link would only be activated after the 30th, when the technician would have been to my house. My easy question has been when it would be activated. No answer. One call desk operator even tells me that a technician must come to my house even if it’s a self-install because they have to install a separate ADSL line??? Please.

With thanks

Pieter Smith

ISDN2a to ADSL conversion

Hi all,

I currently have ISDN2a. Even if I specify a self-install for my ADSL 384 order, a Telkom techie still has to come out to take away the ISDN box, thereby at least charging me for the call-out as it relates to the ISDN equipment removal. Nevertheless, I will repeatedly specify I want a self-install.

I'm also going to have to ask them not to cancel my ISDN2a until they have activated me on the exchange for ADSL. I’m not sure how this is actually going to play out when it comes down to the crunch  ?

I plan on placing the ADSL order late tomorrow afternoon. I was told in July this year I could phone 0800375375 to order it.

Probably within the next 2 weeks time I will get myself the Billion 7300G (ADSL2+ Modem/Router with 4-port Switch) from terencevs at MICTS.

I will probably also use the Cybersmart's 384k 3gb account for R125 pm.

I believe that for self-install, I should go and buy a micro-filter (R39 at Telkom shops) for each POTS device I have (i.e. Telephones/faxes)

I have a few questions:
1) What is the charge for converting ISDN2a to analogue/ADSL?
2) Will I be successful in avoiding the R437 ADSL installation charge since I *have* to let the techie in to remove the ISDN box?
3) If they activate the line at the exchange for ADSL before removing the ISDN box will my ISDN and POTS still work as per normal?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. What is the link to check that your exchange supports ADSL? I have checked this in the past but not recently.
