Telkom ADSL speed increase project concluding

What is this whole "possible reasons for not upgrading a line include that the modem is switched off"? Seems to be the exact opposite to the request I always get from telkom. They always ask me to turn my modem off before they can do any line up/downgrade. Although I always lie to them and tell them the router is off already :D

Good job Telkom, you cured congestion in the neighbourhood 9 months ago with an exchange upgrade, but thanks to poor planning this round of speed increases has brought congestion back again. Back to 500ms local pings and dropped packets during peak time.

Also since you don't offer 10Mbps in the area, it's forced me into the cheaper 4Mbps product, so you've lost that R150 p/m that you should be investing back into the network and continuing to make fixed lines appear "unviable". Lose/lose.

Before the Telkom speed upgrade started I had a stable 10Mb service, pretty much ever since Telkom made the 10Mb service available.

I now have an unstable 5Mb service - downloads 3Mb - with Telkom threatening to remove my ADSL 'cos they are unable to supply a stable service at any speed.

Such is progress ...

I agree, good point.

So what about those of us who have had our speeds DECREASED from a near-constant 2Mbps to a fluctuating between 1.6 and 0.1 Mbps due to "an area fault"? When do we get upgraded back to what we ****ing pay for?

Most exchanges only support 4Mbps maximum

This project saw 1Mbps ADSL lines upgraded to 2Mbps, 2Mbps to 4Mbps, and 4Mbps to 10Mbps.
The possible reasons for not upgrading a line include that the modem is switched off, the quality of the copper is too low for higher speeds, or the distance from the exchange is too far.
What about - your exchange only supports a maximum of 4Mbps - which according to
http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/province/ [broadbandstats]
National
Total Exchanges 1980
Telkom ADSL Enabled 1049 (53%)
Telkom 10Mbps Enabled 235 (12%)

Most 4Mbps users are still at 4Mbps as the exchange does not support anything faster.

Good news is that Telkom is addressing many of these issues. The company said that there is a continuous drive to upgrade all these customers to higher speeds.

IBIWISI bastards.

Was exactly what I wanted to say / ask! Shockingly deceptive press statement from Telkom.

Or, as per the Telkom website:
ADSL Availability
Service Available
Maximum speed available in your area 4 Mbps

I service a lot of clients. Not a single one of them has yet been upgraded.
sorry but we have to take this for what it is... just more smelly bull from Telkom.

Pity there is not any competition regarding fixed lines. If there was any kind of competition then there may have been much faster speeds with better pricing.

Everybody that I know personally with has ADSL has been upgraded. Most people on the forum report being upgraded too.

Good job Telkom.:D Now get those final few customers upgraded quickly and put a MSAN in my area!:)

I've personally been upgraded to 2 Mbps, but I can't get more than 1.6mbps and I'm 3 km from the exchange,
So I'm not too sure if this is the best I'm gonna get or the best is yet to come.

Mine was NOT upgraded!
Which suits me just fine, they talk about the "router not being connected" when they do this.. Dumbasses, do they really think I am going to leave my ADSL plugged in while at work/away, and run the risk of everything being destroyed by lightning? Idiots!
