Telkom ADSL speed increase update

elkom explained that the main reason for customers not having been upgraded yet is that their modems are switched off, hence impeding the technical process of finding the best possible sync rate for their services.

People turn their modems off, I don't think I have ever turned mine off, other than to restart it.

That should read: "We cannot upgrade the rest of the customers as their lines aren't working"

Yeah.

Or: Their lines are so bad / far away from the exchange that 1024 / 2048 is just not possible ;
The exchange is congested ;
There just aren't any lines and will not be replaced. :(

15-25% of people not upgraded of which 'most' have their modems turned off? So at least 10% of Telkoms customers are paying for a service they don't even use?

In Montagu, Robertson and Barrydale it is still 384k. Telkom have no idea when the upgrade will take place.

Strange that ... I'm nearby in Swellendam, and my 1 mbps line was upgraded to 2 mbps within a few days of the start of the roll-out. I know the 384kbps > 1mbps was scheduled at a later date, but it should have happened by now

Somebody more experienced in this please enlighten me how this affects them changing your actual Synch speed ?

Every time I've had to call Telkom to change my synch, they tell me to switch the damn thing off anyway ?

"The modems are off - change the synch - you morons" - or am I getting this all wrong here ??

I know of two friends that turn their modem off each night. They had a bad experience with cap being "stolen" overnight. So now they turn off to be safe. So if it happens they know its not them.

Well thanks to these "upgrades" a lot of people I know are now suffering exchange congestion with local pings in the order of 600+.

Well since these upgrades have started my average speed of my "4Mb/s" line has gone down to just above 1Mb/s. I think they might be doing it wrong...

And harping on the same old message: Wonder when my 4Mbps I have been paying for for many years will be upgraded from 1.7/386 to at least 4Mbps or better......

Same problem in Gordons Bay. Telkom have for years been promising upgrade from 4 to 10 mbps "By Christmas" but they never say which Christmas!

What is the point of the upgrades?

Our IMAX only have 4X E1 Links meaning 8mbps total capacity, and since these upgrades started the congestion has gotten 100% worse.

I wish they had started putting more exchanges on ME before this, then they could have started upgrading 384 to 1, 1 to 2, and 4 to 10, all at the same time!

Speed upgrade - whats the point if they still "throttle" your bandwidth. Dont try peer to peer with Telkom ADSl - just does not work.................

I would still like to see a breakdown of average ADSL speed by telephone exchange.
How about adding an optional drop down field on the Mybroadband speed test, where you can select your exchange, then when the average broadband speed reports are drawn, you can analyse by exchange as well.

In fact this would even be useful for a breakdown of statistics for 8ta, Cell-c, MTN, Vodacom etc, as you could get an idea of the average speed by suburb and service provider.

They actually have done this in my area - I was upgraded to 10mb around the time they started the general upgrades, meaning they added metro ethernet. Methinks that metro ethernet is planned countrywide to coincide with the VDSL project, so you will get your faster speeds soon enough.

+1 to what Hummercellc said.

Telkom may have upgraded the users from 384kbps to 1Mbps and from 1Mbps to 2Mbps, but in many areas this was a very poor decision, because their total bandwidth cannot handle the new loads. So effectively the quality of service degraded in many areas, especially for those who were used to 4Mbps and faster speeds.

Secondly, the statement about the modems being switched off that makes it difficult to change the profile from 384kbps to 1Mbps is a load of nonsense! They should've simply upgraded the people and then if the modem can't sync at 1Mbps, it would sync at the fastest possible speed.

My guess is that they didn't upgrade many people's ADSL because they knew that their total bandwidth wasn't enough to handle the new load.
