Telkom ADSL speed increases and ISP pricing

I suppose you are right. Somebody from the ISP community recently mentioned in an article that import duties should be relaxed on IT hardware. That seemed like a fair suggestion to me. However in as far as infrastructure and cost of service delivery is concerned I've read international debates on the subject and from what I understand the cost per GB of data delivered is somewhere between 1c and 2c (US).

And finally if IPC costs is a significant part of the problem then why haven't we seen a more pronounced decrease in cost on the high speed data bundles? I mean a 30% reduction in IPC costs has come and gone and I'm still paying exactly the same for my 4mbps data account.

That's because 4meg uncapped was selling at a loss previously. That's why the FUPs were so restrictive.

Our pricing and products are still being finalised. We should have more detail by the end of this week.

So lets just wait & see now.

1mbps uncapped: R199
2mbps uncapped: R299
4mbps uncapped: R399
6mbps uncapped: R549
8mbps uncapped: R699
10mbps uncapped: R849

These are the prices and packages I'd like to see from every ISP. You should then also have the option to include ADSL line rental at the discounted wholesale rate.

The above should be for MWEB-quality bandwidth. The other ISPs with IS-quality bandwidth should be about R50 - R100 cheaper depending on package size.

+1 :)

Pfffft..... Yet another reason to hate Telkom, I expected this to happen eventually.. My DSLAM is so crowded my Noise Margin just wont stay at 12db... Not to mention that these idiots dont want to upgrade and/or replace stolen lines with fibre optics.

This company is doing nothing but killing themselves at a slow pace one day at a time.

Precisely what prices are Telkom increasing?

Your noise margin (and attenuation and SNR) has nothing to do with how many other users there are connected to the DSLAM. These figures are calculated based on the quality of the signal traveling on the copper wire from your house till the DSLAM. You could disconnect all the other users from the DSLAM and even from the entire exchange, and it would not affect your noise margin.

However, the port on the DSLAM you're connected to could be faulty. Moving you to another port might make a difference, though it is more likely the copper quality is poor somewhere along the route from your house till the exchange.

An over-crowded DSLAM however can result in lower speeds, if there isn't sufficient backhaul capacity to carry all the traffic from the DSLAM and exchange on to Telkom's core network.

I don't get it, my downstream is still 384k on my MWEB uncapped account, anyone else not been upgraded yet?

June 1, 2012 Telkom free ADSL speed upgrades confirmed

June 5, 2012

Even if telkom only charges the ISPs the increase in price, it is effectively forcing the ISPs, who are operating on very thin margins already, to pass that cost on to the clients.

If telkom increases the price to entry level clients, even though it is through charging the ISPs, it's guilty of false advertising.

It said FREE ADSL SPEED UPGRADES on June 1, 2012.
