Telkom ADSL speed upgrade planned

If it doesn't cause more problems, bring it. However, if it causes exchange congestion, I'm happy to stay at 2Mbps at a reduced price, since I'll be, you know, helping them out.

Funny thing. But my line speed is set to 6mb as it the optimum speed available on my line. And I'm running off a 4mb WebAfrica account.
My two kids can simultaneously stream Netflix while I watch TED on Youtube and my wife is working in the next room.
A episode of A to Z downloads in 15 minutes when it runs after midnight.
So 20mb would be cool, but not really needed. Yet.

According to the map the entire Meyerton is still under consideration to be upgraded. Excluding the area around the Oprah Whinfrey Academy for Girls. That area is allready running at 20 to 40 mbs. Seems its who you know...

I'm about 5-7 k's from Meyerton and we have 40mbps for almost a year now already,I've decided that I'm done with 2mbps and on the 29th I applied for a 20mb line with Vox which at R342 is not bad at all.

Just waiting for them to get the line transferred from Telkom now.

upgrade, yet not enough capacity to support current. Typical backward thinking.

Grrr
I also noticed that Rothdene is at 40mb too.

At work our exchange maxes out at 4mbps and at home 40mbps....I think its great that they are at least trying to upgrade so I don't get why people like you complain, what capacity don't they have? Can you be specific if you are talking about the line company or the ISP telkom?

Thanks to these upgrades, my line is ****tier now (slow, disconnections, drops etc) than it was for the last 7 years. I wish Telkom would increase speeds but ALSO the bloody exchanges...

Pointless if I can't even get ADSL due to "No Ports Available" for almost a year now in Brackenfell...

Upgrade means network upgrade as well... see my earlier post. Else they could have done a software change 12 months ago and given everybody 10Mbps...

So were previous "upgrades" (for example the one that took the lowest speed from 1MB to 2MB) simply software changes?

The exchange capacity. What is the use of 99999MB line speeds, when in reality you are sitting with 3000ms pings and 10% or more packet loss??

And both the ISP and the line company are equally useless and crap.

Let me qualify the "yes" reply just a bit...

There are always upgrades taking place on the Telkom network. Most essential is to upgrade and expand the core network (not your DSLAM, etc.) to be able to manage future traffic loads as well as to replace the obsolete equipment in the network. Much of this was done in preparation for the 2010 SWC and then expanded to the rest of the core network.

At the same time DSLAMs are being replaced with MSAN/ISAM units in the local network. Without the core network in place, these would be useless as the new units require metro-ethernet (fibre) links (not the older ATM links).

Their next target is to replace the remaining ATM links at exchanges where DSLAMs are still present (like the one I'm connected to) with metro-ethernet links. This will improve the backhaul capacity and go a long way tp relieve exchange congestion.

Read my previous post... and I was referring to having to physically do work to enable the switch.

OK. Makes sense. Still think any form of "free" "upgrade" is not a good idea till they sort out the current situation. Where I pay for 4MB and actually get 4MB at least 10% of the time. When that is done, by all means "upgrade" the speeds.

What you mean "adjust"?

Line speed and account speed are unrelated.

Line upgrades /= account upgrade.

I'm talking about the throttling point for uncapped users.

All I fking want is my "current" adsl to work. I have done everything including posting on their Facebook page amongst the 1000's of others and hellopeter over and above sms, online, and email but all I get is a few different reference numbers and nothing else. All it fking needs is to be reset.

I've tried calling various times but get gatvol after holding on for 30min.
I pay for my 4Mbps line and now others are getting upgraded at probably no additional cost and I pay and get zip.
Rant off.

Feel your pain , been waiting since November for a installation , last night I held on the line for 1h33mins just to see how far one could actually go, call dropped when the wireless fone I used battery died :) !!!!

Flippen useless lot

Well they are actively upgrading exchanges and I'm actually caught in the middle with being upgraded at home but being stuck at work with a 4mb exchange I know it can get frustrating but believe me once they upgrade your exchange you will be happy as the backhaul can currently cope with the load.

So what you should be saying is "Telkom upgrade my exchange already so I can use these services!";)
