Telkom ADSL speed upgrade planned

Let me qualify the "yes" reply just a bit...

There are always upgrades taking place on the Telkom network. Most essential is to upgrade and expand the core network (not your DSLAM, etc.) to be able to manage future traffic loads as well as to replace the obsolete equipment in the network. Much of this was done in preparation for the 2010 SWC and then expanded to the rest of the core network.

At the same time DSLAMs are being replaced with MSAN/ISAM units in the local network. Without the core network in place, these would be useless as the new units require metro-ethernet (fibre) links (not the older ATM links).

Their next target is to replace the remaining ATM links at exchanges where DSLAMs are still present (like the one I'm connected to) with metro-ethernet links. This will improve the backhaul capacity and go a long way tp relieve exchange congestion.

I take it that since I'm connected via ADSL2+, I'm probably on a MSAN/ISAM then?

Max speed I can reach according to my router is 18Mbps...and I'm quite a distance away from the exchange. Hope my 4Mbps gets upgraded to 10 Mbps then! :D

Well they are actively upgrading exchanges and I'm actually caught in the middle with being upgraded at home but being stuck at work with a 4mb exchange I know it can get frustrating but believe me once they upgrade your exchange you will be happy as the backhaul can currently cope with the load.

So what you should be saying is "Telkom upgrade my exchange already so I cna use these services!";)

Shouldn't I be saying "Telkom please give me what I am paying full price for each month on time with no excuses"?

if this is true then I am also already on the MSAN also. Which makes my situation even worse as basically my exchange is crap AFTER being upgraded.

What are you paying for exactly?2mb line,4mb line,10mb line? And what's the maximum real world speeds you can actually get?

4MB Line. Capped account which basically works as fast as the line.

Speeds I get are about 350-400 kilobytes per second. Problem is, that speed means buggerall when you need to hit the refresh button 20 times just to get a page to load. And you need to download something 50 times as the first 49 times it times out. And when watching a 3 minute youtube video, having to imagine what happens in the last two minutes of the video because the video wont go further than that.

Have you tried changing your ISP?

That sucks, sounds like you have an actual line issue, did you have telkom send techies over to sort out your line fault?

Have logged numerous faults. Only ever get SMS and a few days later another SMS saying its resolved. They called this morning for the first time and only because I logged it as "noisy" instead of "intermittent service" like I normally do.

Make sure you get a techie to physically come out to you and check it from your side. You can even just log an ADSL line fault saying no service and then explain to the techie what happens when he comes to your place, he will sort it out for you, probably a problem with your copper somewhere in the last mile.

Had the same issue, till I Telkom_ZA sorted this out for me, I was too far from the exchange and my line was moved to different exchange.... now happy on my 10Mbps line. Would take 20mbps if it was available.
