Based on the Telkom register interest site,can someone please explain the attached map.If you look towards your far left there is a streak of green which according to the legend means 20/40Mbps enabled yet at the same time largely overlapped by light...purple? meaning area currently under consideration for future 20/40Mbps roll-outs.I'd appreciate some help in deciphering and hence my interest in Telkom's project plans with regards to roll-outs.Thanx.

Ok, I don't mean "pay off" technically, I just mean trying to maximise return on investment from sizeable capital investments on an MSAN that has a relatively small difference in the running costs between an active 4Mbps or 20Mbps port.

Sorry, that green on the left in your map is just an open field. Here's the two greens side by side, with the 20/40 enabled being the colour on the left and the open field colour on the right.

The red overlay you see is "under consideration", but frankly that can better be viewed as "tough luck". Basically if you can currently get ADSL it's red, and doesn't mean that anything is happening soon.

Not true for all instances. ADSL is available in the town where I live but there is no colour coding on the map whatsoever.

It's this thing, https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/interest-register/location, where blue represents light at the end of the tunnel for your area. Or I suppose pinky/purple, but with the current data packages and ISP lock I actually wouldn't want Telkom fibre.

Thank you for posting the link. Interesting to see things like this. Unfortunately my street appears to be at the back of the queue for upgrades. Will not complain though. I would love it to be quicker, but will live with the speeds I enjoy for the time being.

Upgrade means network upgrade as well... see my earlier post. Else they could have done a software change 12 months ago and given everybody 10Mbps...

Really good news to see that this involves hardware upgrades. I cannot sync at anything higher than 4mbps so maybe this will allow me to get something a little further up the food chain.

That is only a guideline your router will show based on your stats that it is reading it from. It does not tell you if your exchange can support the higher speeds and only Telkom can tell you .

Phone 10210 and keep trying until someone competent tells you the MAX you can get.

True. I more meant that red is phrased on the site as "on your mark / under consideration", which some people may interpret as being more positive a sign than it really is.

What does this mean for people on 10Mb/s? Will we be upgraded to 20mb/s, or are we going to be left on 10?

I would also like to know. Might drop line rental? If not ill downgrade before they start and get free upgrade

Talking of Imax

Make sure you get a techie to physically come out to you and check it from your side.You can even just log an ADSL line fault saying no service and then explain to the techie what happens when he comes to your place, he will sort it out for you,probably a problem with your copper somewhere in the last mile.

I had terrible ADSL downstream performance for over a week, finally a bright spark at Afrihost support actually did some work and reported the problem to Telkom. So when Telkom techie finally got round to calling me, he said he would come to my place and check it. I told him not to waste his time but just go to exchange and physically plug me into a different switch! Anyway he sez ahhh OK then and off he goes, an hour later he phones me from the exchange and tells me he has plugged me into Imax unit and Voila I am happy again.

IMAX units are ADSL2+ capable with speeds of up to 24Mbps. Most IMAX units have metro-ethernet backhaul links, which should help with any congestion issues as well.

So you are still on the same switch but he moved you from a DSLAM to an IMAX.

All I want is 10 meg, but no always stuck on 4 meg and the upgrades do nothing even though my line stats can do VDSL easily.
