I have it on good authority that Telkom has bought MWeb, has anyone heard about this in the news? Or is this another Telkom special, buying out the competition? Whose next IS? Polka?

Polka had been acquired by Mweb for sometime already. If Telkom is buying Mweb, what happened to the competition commission?

Interesting first post AndreFourie :)

I very much doubt this but then again, anything is possible in South Africa.

I'll wait to hear the official news before I believe what I hear.

Then again, Mweb is a mini Telkom already, so it wouldn't make much difference to me. Can't see the competition commission letting this deal go through, but I may be wrong.

Nope. A deal this size would have to be lodged with all the different authorities and I have seen no communnication on it to date. Also doubt whether Telkom would do anything like this while in a "closed period" pending it annual financial results day in June.

I agree - the two largest ISPs in the consumer space joining forces will surely be a threat to competition. I think this may in fact be one of the reasons why Telkom only purchased MWEB Africa.

And maybe OP then was referring to the deal involved Telkom and Mweb Africa?

Didmweb not buy up tons of ISP's? So whats the problem with telkom doing so.

Mweb is just as bad as telkom so who cares if telkom buys them. Only nooblets use mweb :p

Info comes from source involved with Telkom, I'll try to find out more info, it could be MWeb Africa only. I found this out by coincidence as we were discussing something completely unrelated when this come up. They don't even know I work in IT. I didn't want to press for more info and make it look strange, but I'll see what i can find out.

Even so the problem with Telkom buying other ISP's is that they control the land line infrastructure. If Telkom owns another major ISP it really makes for Microsoft type situation where the can manipulate the market at will, with the new fiber access coming up controlling another major ISP's market power and preventing them from protesting to a delay in prices cuts would make them more profitable. Neotel is not really coming to the table with providing ADSL and they don't really look very interested in land line services in general. While I don't really have a problem with Neotel's last mile approach the majority of internet users still require an ADSL line. Until the current land line infrastructure is less monopolized and users have more choice in service providers

The people who enjoy being ripped off won't notice a difference if Telkom is getting the cash now :)

They can't help it, TV advertising does wonders for business! Working in a PC shop, it amazes me how many people know sweet f-all about what they want to buy. I try advise them as best I can, but now I know why fail companies like MWEB are still in business.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
First Telkom messed up my ADSL. Now they are going to mess up my email account also!!! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScreamScream.

Yep, they made a late entry into the market, bought everybody they could find, flooded the market with network locked modems and then boasted about how great they were. I would not touch them with Telkoms 10 foot barge pole.
