Telkom CEO Leaves

As far as I can see Papi accomplished precisely nothing during his tenure. The DSL price drops that did occur were the result of govt/public pressure rather than any independent direction by the CEO.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

No doubt the next CEO will be as big a tosser.

Not quite nothing - he lined his pocket(s) with more bucks than many make in a lifetime... Far too many of these kind of bloodsuckers around.

Somebody - half the forum?? - beat me to next one.

Ivy next - else no hope...:D

Report on IT Web that Papi was safe for now... That was from this morning.

It looks like the government might have pushed him because he didn't lower the costs of telecommunication as he was told to...

Weirder things have happened. I am just not sure when?

I would not be so sure. Shareholders may have pushed him because he seemed to soft on consumers... I don't think he was soft at all. He sung the right tune, but didn't dance at all.

I doubt it was for the good of mankind that he was forced out.

IMO exactly the opposite - I agree with Skip ITO this being more about a clash of personalities and incompatible management styles than Thabo saying 'lower the prices or you are fired', so I suspect that there will be a promotion from within the current ranks of someone that the rest are used to by now, probably the acting CEO September will become the de facto CEO...

I have a feeling it will be somebody not from our shores.

Papi did a great Job of stalling just about anything and everything, good job his five pillars were nicked, carting them out of the Telkom Towers would have been a problem.

The old under new management trick, done to death, but you can still get away with it. Now with him out the way do you really think any acting CEO is going to make any changes (lets face it Papi did act the part as well) - So give it a month or two and nothing happens, then you would not have a situation were the New ' incompetent ' does anything, the usual looking into it, still getting the feel of it all, talking to, interested parties, role players and Stakeholders - Meetings at the highest level, acting on our mandate, consulting with ICASA.... And then you get to the time were Telkom has to come up with their new prices, June - July for August / September.... so you can quickly work out that it's already been worked out, sort of like someone breaking into Bob ' The Mug ' house and stealing Next Years Zim election results

Who knows what goes on, maybe Papi got sick of the puppet stuff and said things are going to change and they said no way... be a good puppet and take the money

then he said.... look you fools, this whole thing is going to come down on us like a pack of cards, the game is up... the people are talking, the few crumbs you throw at the ADSL crowd has not shut them up, the Government are at us, Lawsuits are falling apart, Neotel is waiting in the wings, there are calls to sack Ivy, the competition commission is going to do us, we are no longer a monopoly, and unless we come up with real business solutions we will be toast

Everyone knows that the bubble has to burst, has been the first rule of business for centuries, the only thing that has changed is the fine art of keeping the bubble going for that bit longer, which is what is going on now

The sad part of it all is that with each passing day the opportunity for making life better for everyone is delayed, the growth that SA has seen is only a fraction of would it should be, perhaps some are too afraid to take the hard path, and think there will be some measure of happiness in easy money, sadly there will not. So the only option is to keep things going, sack the business for what you can and bale out

As another Bob once said " You better get out, if you can't lend a hand "

Bye Papi, can't say you'll be missed. :D Just hope they replace you with someone better!!!

Hmmmm, Papi gave us empty promises, at least we know what to expect from him, predictability can be comforting sometimes. What if telkom's next abomination isn't as simple, could the beast turn us into optimists

We're already optimists for coming back here day after day. Well, perhaps we're masochists.

Wherever there's empty promises, there's a chance for something better. If indeed the next one turns out the same, well, we'll keep grinding away (not that we got Papi fired, but awareness would certainly be very much lessened without myadsl).

Interesting to note, in the 5min between the news coming out and the close of business, the Telkom shares on the JSE rose 2.4%, while the Telkom shares on the NYSE rose 3.5%. Definitely the market sees this as a positive step.

Maybe the interests of customers and shareholders aren't diametrically opposed then as some seem to assume.

IMO that depends on whether an investor perceives NeOTel to be a major threat or not, i.e. if there is effectively no real threat of competition, then investors would generally not give a damn about the monopoly's customers, whereas if competition is seen as a major threat then customer retention becomes an issue which investors should be concerned about. Papi did the exact opposite of retaining customers - as soon as NeOTel offers an acceptable alternative [price & QoS], investors should see lots of customers leaving Telkodemonopolies in droves...

I think a lot of customers already see an acceptable alternative in the various wireless/cell operators. It might not be for everyone, but the fact is most of the market requires relatively low caps, at the moment anyway. I'm sure that'll change in the future but 1 or 2GB is probably more than enough for 90% of the market, I wonder if the recent price cuts by MTN & Voda, Sentech, Iburst etc. might have made Telkom and its investors realise the market was becoming more competitive which is why they axed Papi? MTN stated their bundle purchases increased by 1000% after the price cuts, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of those were ex-Telkom customers, particularly ex-dialup users.

I'm also sure it was the dial up guys. The ISP fee is around R75 a month plus the cost of your calls. On cellular R75 a month is probably enough for small users for email and occasional surfing.
