This is news to me. We just downgraded our 1Mb/4Mb ADSLto a 512K ADSL. Telkom informed me of a fee of R320. I asked what it costs to upgrade and the response was absolutely nothing. The process is exactly the same from there side.

I am still a customer, I have not left them, I am not changing a contract. They are penalizing me once again unfairly.

I don't understand their logic.

Its the same business logic as with the cellphone operators afaik, you can upgrade for free but it costs you to downgrade, the reason is probably because they will be not making as much money as before

end your adsl service then take a self install on the new package you want. Its the cheapest way to do it.

I dont think it makes sense. I am not in a contract with Telkom.

If you don't have a contract with them.... then cancel.. wait two days, and have it re-initiated at the new speed :) Tell them you don't need installation?

With a cellular contract they have a subsidy for a handset included and they use the forcasts of subscription to make budget plans etc, Telscum are just being money grubbers by charging you to downgrade. As long as you are not in a contract then they cant budget against an unforseen thing.

Unfortunately most of us are not in the situation where we can have down time. I just find it a pathetic and for that some of money. They are really taking every cent they can take from consumers.

Take an example of your Telkom bill. If you pay in cash you round off to 0 or 5 nowadays. Telkom still carry over the 3 cents until your next bill. They squeeze every cent from you.

They really are making sure we do not remain customers of theirs when we have the option.

makes sense - you upgrade for free - they get more money from you.
If you downgrade then they're going to lose money - so they charge you a fee :)

Must be the chinese math again!

Well, I "upgraded" from a 4meg to a Do Broadband 2 (356k), and not only did I not have to pay the downgrade fee, but they credited my account with a refund for the 4 meg line - maybe this is a way to get around the downgrade fee - upgrade from nobroadband to donobroadband.

Agreed. Pay the 320 and move on. Just grates my ass.

Oh and by the way. Telkom charge to use their toilets as well. :)
