Telkom considering free 10 Mbps ADSL upgrades

Getting jealous of all these high speed users...wish Telkom decided to run a trial out in my area!
 
Does durban have all the requirements?
"Telkom previously warned that not all 4 Mbps subscribers will be upgraded to the higher speeds at the same time since the upgrades need exchanges with the latest DSL2+ equipment & software and they must have Metro Ethernet connectivity."
will take years if not
 
Why, in all these articles, is the upgrade of the lesser lines never mentioned? Do the authors even ask telkom about them? Do they even care? 4->10. w00t w00t. What about the other 85% of the population?

They will not affect ISPs.

Yes, since the speeds of the ISP service are managed. Only a slight increase in the paid for speeds will be noticed, since overheads play less of a role when the telkom speed is higher, than the ISP package speed.

No more speed than the package paid for, will be available.

Exactly, you could have the 384 uncapped on a 4 meg line and only download at 40kb's....its the package the ISP are managing, not the line speed

My little girl wants to know if we are going to see this in 2010.

Does lower speed adsl line use different hardware on Telkom side? Doesit cost more to for them to supply a faster line than a slower one?

It's not the individual hardware that costs more, it's the fact that 4mbit users use more of the capabilities of shared hardware, than a 384k connection. So you can run 10 384k connections on the shared hardware required to run 1 4mbit connection.
