Telkom considering free 10 Mbps ADSL upgrades

except you'll be getting a 10mbps line. On a 4 meg line it takes about 5 hours to do 5gig. So on a 10meg line it should take somewhere around 2 hours.

edit: a gig is about 45min on 4meg meaning 5gig on a 10meg should be about an hour and a half.

i get relatively good speeds on news servers with my 4megabit line im in Durban and receive about 450kbps thats 87% of the full line speed theorically received, but still no talk about durban even being trialled for the service, need to phone telkom and find out which dslam i am on?

I am not more worried about more speed. My 4 on ASDL is perfect what I want is more cheap/uncapped BANDWIDTH!!

Copper has the same limiting qualities, whether in SA, Germany, UK, USA.......etc. In SA copper lines were always pushed to the longest lengths due to the spread out nature of our cities and communities/communities. In the UK for instance its not very often you get exchange connections longer than 4km......Whereas in SA lines can go very long 5, 6 and sometimes 7km. The longer the copper is, the more it impedes high frequency signals like ADSL.

You remember this graph......it represents the expected results of ADSL over copper with its inherent transmission properties.

My line attenuation is 17.5dB (about 1km from the exchange).........so on ADSL I could expect 22Mb/s !!!! (but Ill take Telkoms offer of 10Mb/s for now)

If you remove all the emotion about rolling out to the masses, the fact remains that a lot of existing customers cannot upgrade because of the facts stated here. Too long lines and old copper cables.

Then why can't Telkom say something like: we'll release 24Mbps ADSL, subject to your line quality? Why keep everyone crawling at 4Mbps max?
 
Why are we talking as if this is an either/or situation? :confused:

I want BOTH! I want a faster line AND more bandwidth... and I am hoping for both this year.

Don't cut yourselves short guys... demand both. This is 2010... not 1910.

As "Leftfoot" tried to explain, unlike the UK and Europe, most of our suburbs are built horizontally and vertically. Suburbs are very spread out with long copper lines.

You are wrong. One of the previous announcements said that they would start rolling out 8Mb in March and April with the project being finished within 6 months.

So depending on
which Exchange you are on and
how far you are from the Exchange and
whether your Exchange has the newer ADSL 2+ equipment

will determine when and how fast

Telkom are not dumb enough to release the schedule because the crying about priorities and missed deadlines will drown the benefit.

So one day you will wake up and it will be faster. You may not even notice it until you look at your router settings

Irony is, as someone mentioned, if Telkom upgraded the "theoretical" speeds of all the connections, chances are i will actually -downgrade- to a cheaper package because my line don't support the faster speeds ANYWAY.

Yes, this is it. It was originally due for rollout in October last year, but was delayed due to problems with the interfaces in some of the exchanges. I mentioned that in several other threads.
 
I get so frustrated by the replies to these news articles about Telkom's ADSL trials. Everytime one of these articles is posted, the thread is hijacked by people complaining about being on 384 speed, line quality, and not having enough 'cap'.

I think there are a couple of facts that need to be considered before posting in a thread about the trials:
1. Telkom is busy upgrading their exchanges to ADSL2+. I believe this means that many of you will experience much better sync speeds once your exchange has been upgraded. Be just a little patient!
2. The 'cap' really has no place in a thread on ADSL trials - start a new thread if you're sad that the speed increase will eat your cap faster!
3. For many people the current 4Mbps ADSL lines are performing brilliantly (mine for example)! Yes, I agree that Telkom should be working towards fixing problems with bad quality copper, etc. but this is not a valid reason for them to NOT go about trying to offer an even better service for the large number of people that can make use of it.

Why do people get into such a tizz about the timing of the implementation of this. Think about what has to go into upgrading an exchange to handle multiple 10Mbps ADSL lines - the upgrading of the actual exchange to ADSL2+, as well as ensuring that the exchange has enough backhaul bandwidth (i.e. is connected to the MetroEthernet backbone). This is no small task. Furthermore, we have seen speedtest screenshots of some of the guys who are on the trial and have been bumped up to these speeds, so something is happening!

Lastly, I'd like to thank the Staff Writer for these continued updates on the trials - it's great to see updates on the matter, even if you're unable to get specific dates.
