Telkom considering free 10 Mbps ADSL upgrades

rpm .. please .. no more imminent articles, I dont think I can stand another one .. please .. its been 2 months since these trials were reported as beginning, and still we have no date .. the world cup is around the corner, and as far as Im aware FIFA require a moratorium on all telco infrastructure changes from a few months before till after the world cup .. which means if these are "coming" unless they get here in the next month .. we wont see them till August .. which is FAR from imminent..

Someone correct me if Im wrong ??

It's amazing. People have just heard that they're line speeds might be increased for free, and they still complain!

ADSL2 won't solve the copper problems which so many of us have. Old copper just isn't a good transport medium, and causes havoc with high frequency signals.

My thoughts exactly. It's like watching Formula Yawn, then trudging off to work in my Beetle.
That's because you're paying for the Beetle. The F-Yawn is available, but you actually have to pay to get it. While I would also like a 100 Mbps line, I know that I'm paying for a 384 kbps line. If I needed a 4 Mbps line so badly I'd up and pay for it. Yeah, we do overpay and we get too little, but slowly it is changing. At least it is better than the rest of the service delivery around here.

Ok, enjoy the flaming!

Zero.

Your issue is either the distance from your premises to the DSLAM (length of copper cable) or the condition of the physical cable and joints between your premises and the DSLAM.

Hmmm. Thanks.

I suppose that I should be grateful that I get 2Mbps.

I prefer to be kept in the loop w.r.t. the broadband environment, even if they are "imminent". What's the point of only ever reporting on developments after the fact? Boring...

What's the point of introducing 10mb when some 4mb customers (like myself) cannot even sync at higher than 1mb?

IMHO, I think that this will be the greatest headache. Telkom took 5 weeks to get me onto 4 Mbps and I am still not convinced that its up to the speeds promised. Don't misunderstand me, I can appreciate the line is much quicker than DSL 384.

I was told that at 4 Mbps my connection was unstable (?) and couldn't sync (?) and then they jimmied something to get it to sync at 4 (or so I am told).

I am not sure that many of us will get to appreciate the upgraded line speeds offered, let alone the many, many more who just cannot afford the significant price tag for this. :(

I think Telkom should keep the 384 package and make it dirt cheap so that people that cant afford ADSL can finly benefit.

This is what I think Telkom need to do:
Lower the cost of 384 to R85 a month
Move 384 to 512
Move 512 to 2mb
Move 4mb to 10mb

Because hardware and software needs to be upgraded. A lot of work has to be done to make these things work!
I thought that's why we've been paying line rental (twice) for all these years: so they can maintain, upgrade and expand the network :erm:

Flojo asked why we have to wait months. I said that we have to wait because some work needs to be done first. I didn't say that can't expect an upgrade, just that it takes time. I agree, we are paying (twice) for it.

nope, its to give the FAT CATS huge undeserved bonuses.........wouldn't be suprized if Julius Malema got a hand in the big fat telkom pie

I like this idea. If something like this plays out, I might move to the 2mbps option, which might be why Telkom wouldn't go for an option like this. We'll have to see.

10mg line would be freeking awesome !!!
1gb cap with 10 mg line = fail capped in minutes

I Agree completely .. my problem is part of the content .. not the whole article .. in January .. we were told that 8mb line upgrades were coming in a few months .. now we are told in march .. that 10mb is coming in a few months .. but the 8mbit hasn't even rolled out yet.. I dont doubt that this is reported as it was spoken, but my point is .. why no date .. why no timeline .. why no reason for the 8mb rolled out already .. most of the articles are "in a few months" .. really .. this is wearing a little thin now .. and in a few months some other revelation diverting from the fact that "a few months" has passed and Telkom has moved on to the next best thing without implementing the first.

Why are we still waiting for new Telkom bundle pricing that was meant to be launched in "a few months" months ago ...

My point is .. that articles like those require follow ups .. not new empty promises.

Sorry .. just feeling really frustrated this am with progress, and our local ANCYL clown running off his mouth .. feeling a bit anti South African at the moment .. im sure it will wear off once my coffee kicks in.

The upgrades will indeed be across the board for all users and speeds... and will also include new packages from Telkom. :)

This just doesn't make any sense?

Why fart around with 10Mbs when the next logical jump should be 24Mbs ADSL2+?
Just as you start rolling out 10Mbs, the competition is going to to start offering realworld 14Mbs on cellular broadband and 15Mbs FiOS from Neotel and others.

Your latest greatest offering still leaves you lagging the competition!

I suppose the best we can hope for is that they drop the crippled slower speed profiles entirely and bump up the upload speeds significantly.

What competition?

Geez, currently i have a 10gb cap on my 4mb line and i still need to pace myself. What the pomp is going to happen when i have a 8mb or 10mb line. Might just downgrade my line once they drop my 384/512

What is it REALLY like

I like this idea. If something like this plays out, I might move to the 2mbps option, which might be why Telkom wouldn't go for an option like this. We'll have to see.

Please could someone that has had / used all these different speeds comment

I am on 384 -- matter of cost -- and I do not download movies all day ( and night)

OK

Using the current speeds available

SO what is it like going from 384 to 512 -- how much of a difference can you notice ????

going from 512 to 4Mbs

How much of a difference is there going from 512 to say 1Mbs or 2Mbs

Anyone have any idea of what the 384 users will be upgraded to ????

To come back to the ADSL2+

Telkom just do NOT have the backhaul capacity to upgrade everyone to 24Mbps that is it plain and simple

As for the GSM guys -- VC / MTN / Cell C -- 14Mbps NO competition -- too EXPENSIVE , too patchy , too unreliable.
