Telkom considering free 10 Mbps ADSL upgrades

Wonder how big the footprint of the trial is/was?

My exchange is within sight of the NOC, yet it has not been included in this trial so far.

We have a 148Mbps international line here at the University of Stellenbosch, which will be upgraded to 600Mbps by the end of the year

The fastest download I have had was at 7.2MBps. Sweet!:D

EDIT: Here is a screenshot of the campus download speed record when they tested it last year.

Yes, I do all my downloading at varsity as well... Even torrents fly :)

Btw, you can get OpenSuse locally from http://mirror.ac.za, unless it is faster from Italy :p

So what happens if you apply for the 10Mbps and your line only sync's properly at 1Mbps? Does that mean you can't apply for that package then?

Im sure they would say put you in the 2mb category if that was the case! but the above i doubt is gonna happen! who knows !

That wasn't me downloading OpenSuse. I think the guys testing the line actually went through some trouble to find a server fast enough to download something from at (our) full speed. That was the fastest they found.:D

384 to 512 is seriously a waste of time, hoping Telkom actually care for a change. I'm hoping everything will be in Mbps soon and do away with kbps, but as always Telkom will disappoint :p

Haha, if that is the case I'm gonna go find me some .it download links :)

We've been hearing about the "next generation" network for some time now. Upgrade must be imminent...

Keep 384 or make it 512 drop the prices a lot (This will make ADSL penetration a lot easier)
Upgrade the 384 to 1 meg
Upgrade the 512 to 2 meg
Upgrade the 1 meg to 4+ meg (Whatever your line and exchange can handle)

Then you will have 512, 1, 2, 4+ packages...

Make the 512 adsl rental something like R100 a month... This means you will be able to have a 512 line with 3 gigs for say R200... And see adsl subscriptions grow...

You're forgetting the R131pm line rental...

First off whats interesting to note is that its an ADSL2+ service.
As stated in the post unless your hooked up to the Imax/Metro ethernet exchange you can forget about 10mbit unless you live quite close to the exchange,
even then i think your pushing your luck with trying to synch anything about 8mbit on G.DMT modulation

Reading through this thread brings me to one conclusion; most people just don't get it. They just have no concept of the technologies or the complexities. The amount of variables that affect a copper line is immense. ADSL modems do a wonderful job of operating on some terrible line conditions and everyone will not be equal with respect to line quality. You cannot blanket up everyone to a higher line rate as the line might not support it. If you already have 4mb, you will most likely get the full 10mb. If you are on a crappy line with 384mb does not mean you can upgrade to even 512mb. These are the realities.

With free 10Mbit upgrades, will ISPs also offer same priced uncapped packages?
Will 4Mbit/sec a/h still cost about R1000 when the draw now becomes more than double that?
