My experience is vastly different, When Telkom Mobile works it works well, but we hardly have signal here at any given time.
I am talking about TM's home network not roaming on MTN.... I couldn't roam as the package I had was TM only....
I guess it is location dependent, But I have never had good service with Telkom Mobile....

MTN on the other hand, their network is reliable......

Damn dude, my heart bleeds for you! :(

Whereas I'm having the time of my life with lots and lots of fast HSPA+ data, crystal clear sound when making phone calls....you have had the opposite.

Move to the Promised Land! :D

Any idea if/when Telkom will have the S5 in blue?
Considering porting from Vodacom...

Hi Evil-Concarne

Thank you for considering Telkom Mobile. We currently have Samsung S5 only in White and Black, please do watch out for other colours to be released on our Network.

Regards
Telkom Mobile

I ported my Vodacom number to TM on the 1st of March 2014. Even though it was done over the weekend my TM sim was fully operational the next day.

Data: (Keep in mind I have wifi at work & home) I purchased 500mb @ R95 that you can use across all networks. I have used it from time to time, for example when using my GPS, and no coverage problems so far.

Voice: on Vodacom I normally used in the region of R100 per week for voice calls. Since moving over to TM I used exactly R100 for the 1st month, which will make me believe that they are 4 times cheaper than Vodacom. its important to note that I dont know anyone that uses TM, so I couldn't really benefit from their reduced call rates, I just used my phone as per normal. Furthermore, I haven't experienced any dropped calls, or anything like that.

Overall I am very happy!

Remember to keep in mind LTE will not work with the S5 on Telkom Mobile, and by porting you will also be unable to receive international SMSes (including google/facebook/microsoft authentication SMSes)

I have a S4, I ported from Vodacom to TM, and I receive those SMS's.

Is this only related when porting to TM and using a S5?

No, I was under the impression no-one ported could receive international SMSes. I have never been able to on my iPhone5.

Their site even states:
Customers that have ported in to Telkom Mobile from another network can send international SMS's but they are not yet able to receive them.

Weird. I am actively using a Google verification code for my gmail. Just checked my inbox, the number its coming from is "+2784000151090229".

The +27 indicates local, right?

Yeah, not sure how it gets routed - odd. All I know is I was with cellc, could receive all those SMSes with 0 problems, ported over and never been able to receive any international SMSes since. Called telkom and they said it was a limitation with porting.

But I'll look in my google settings, might be a place I can set my locational services to SA..

I'm currently on Vodacom and was going to get the S5 with them, but the Telkom Mobile contract is really much better than any other carrier. (2GB data!)

There are, however, two problem I'm worried about.

First thing is LTE does not work. I believe it's because Telkom uses 2300Mhz and the S5 does not support that. Considering HSDPA is fairly fast these days, I don't think this a major problem in the next 2 years, however it is a minor inconvenience.

Second thing is that porting numbers to Telkom Mobile means I won't be able to receive international SMS's (any idea on when this will be fixed? I see news articles going way back to 2011 about this topic), which is a major hassle when I'm using SMS authentication for international sites. Is there any way to get around this? This is essentially the number 1 reason I'm hesitant about porting over.

Most of the main sites will have a voice authentication option, basically you'll get a phone call with a computer voiced code. It works with Microsoft and Google, not sure about the others. My biggest issue is just not being able to receive SMSes from family and friends overseas - one even thought I was ignoring her for months :erm:

Edit: But honestly, I'm with telkom mobile and I'm porting over to MTN for the afrihost data and LTE. There is no major benefit to telkom mobile in my opinion.

I guess the voice-code is a nice work-around. But that's exactly what I'm afraid of - someone SMS'ing me from overseas and me being oblivious to it...

Sadly, the Afrihost LTE covers mostly the CBD here in Cape Town, and almost no suburban areas at the moment. Also, MTN does not offer the Galaxy S5 (or am I just bad with internets ).

:D

Still thinking either Telkom Mobile or Vodacom.

Going down to the stores sometime this weekend to chat with TM, see if plans can be made.

As a corporate user , we had a nightmare of an experience getting our Finance GM a note3 . Telkom made tons of promises that we were to receive corporate help to our advantage. Guess again - they couldn't deliver the correct spec note3 in 3 weeks time. They also couldn't get international dialing right for 2 weeks. They so damaged their image that our CEO and Finance GM is not going to do do any future business. Not a word about sorry or a visit from our account manager to the CEO or GM to explain/repair the damage. So much for setting up the "business circle" :( . Their loss!

Hi Bionic,

Did the Telkom Mobile shop in Gateway have the 16gb LTE version (G900F) or the 32gb non-lte version (G900H)?

Thanx
