Telkom denies flat ADSL access fee discussions

I'm really anticipating something good next month... Maybe for once Telkom will surprise us.

However the whole IPC thing makes me even angrier at them for their stranglehold that could have easily been more lenient in prior years. Why did they have to stagnate the entire IT sector in this country? Money, of course.

Somehow my line is rock solid at 7557kbps sync with a 50+ attenuation and 20+SNR... yet I live 4km(driving distance) from the exhange so it would be very interesting to find out how other lines are for people closer to the SSW exchange.
Mine syncs at 10Mbps, but running a 1Mbps uncapped line as as much as I want the extra speed I don't need it (well not at the cost anyway). I am near the Lord Charles on the SW side.

I think this is possible. I think this will come about around November this year when they introduce Bit Stream. This way ISP's will have access to the exchange. With all this new under sea cables coming I dont see why this cant happen. The latest cable to come to our shores was WACS which runs speeds of 5Tbps. We have our required link to the world its now an internal battle. Also its the country's plan to have dsl in every household by 2020. So why cant this happen?

I agree, bitstream hands traffic off to the ISP from the exchange, so the congestion will be part of your ISP's package, not Telkom, this is also dependent on what tech Telkom is using for the backhaul, but considering the amount of fibre they already have I don't think this is going to be a problem for long. With the MSAN roll out which effectively means you will have FTTx and their NGN (10Gb+ per fibre pair, lots of pairs to the MSAN) I think the backhaul issue is going to sort itself out fairly soon. The real question I have is how Telkom are going to manage the pricing and performance of the normal exchanges vs MSANs until the full network upgrade is complete and what the pricing of the flat ADSL rate will be... Then of course how the ISPs will price as customers in CT will no doubt be cheaper to them than those in Pofadder (depending on how Telkom charge for bitstream).

All in all interesting times ahead, I can only hope that flat ADSL will not be more than R152pm and the ISPs get creative on their offerings. I wonder if Telkom will do regional Bitstream options etc to foster growth in smaller ISPs, otherwise the big guys are going to push the others out...

Okay, let me get this right, the scenario would be thus. You already have a telephone line(R139) from telkom then u need ADSL you apply, pay install fee(R404) then flat monthly rate...R284.67(just averaged current prices). Now the exciting bit starts.....

You go to Telkom website check your sync rate/speed and... voila!! 2Mbps.Now you proceed to your favorite ISP with your empty basket.....

1Mbps(50GB/m)=R190, 2Mbps(50GB/m=R250, 4Mbps(50GB/m)=R290,1Mbps(Uncapped/m)=R199, 2Mbps(Uncapped/m)=R289, 4Mbps(Uncapped/m)=R360..... etc etc etc, keeping in mind the line speed at which you sync...........*prices thumbsucked for illustrative purposes*

Exciting!!!! Right?? Of course this would also work with naked adsl, perhaps at a slightly higher flat rate.

The point that I would like to know more about is the bitstream cost model, this will directly affect the retail pricing as well as the incentive Telkom will have to roll out the fibre NGN and MSANs to as much of the population as possible. Or, to put it another way, the incentive Telkom has to get the fastest possible ADSL speed to you since ADSL is flat-rated. Of course their IPTV setup and so would be one reason, but I am not sure that would be a reason to accelerate the high speed network roll out to all areas.

Therein lies the catch... it will NOT be to all areas.

Well it certainly would be nice for us students...if it means we can get a faster line at a cheaper price, i won't say no!

I can see someone being a little unhappy syncing at 1Mbps vs the 24Mbps new max speeds others will be getting with no likely upgrade path while paying the same line access rate... Maybe a more interesting question would be around using bitstream access for backhaul- I am thinking about the wireless service providers specifically who could then service areas and clients who are not getting or going to get MSAN access. They could break out from the nearest MSAN(s) on their network and provide steady, fast internet for their customers.

Will the new 40Mbps ADSL be as priced as a 10mbps ADSL uncapped package at the moment?

Good question... I dont know! I think it will probably be around R2000 seeing that the 10MB line price already dropped for SOME ISP's. If this is the price it would put pressure on the ISP's to drop there 10MB and 4MB prices alot. Will the 10MB line price drop to the price of the current 4MB price??? ...interesting times ahead!!!
