Telkom denies flat ADSL access fee discussions

Good idea I think, but sadly I doubt Telkom's infrastructure could handle it. DSLAMs and exchanges will get congested so quickly in many areas that internet access will come to a crawl. Telkom will simply shrug their shoulders and say that we pay a fixed rate for best effort, and currently best effort in your area means 56kbps, sorry. No, with Telkom involved I only see a disaster waiting to happen.

I really don't see this happening. Ever. /thread

I think this is possible. I think this will come about around November this year when they introduce Bit Stream. This way ISP's will have access to the exchange. With all this new under sea cables coming I dont see why this cant happen. The latest cable to come to our shores was WACS which runs speeds of 5Tbps. We have our required link to the world its now an internal battle. Also its the country's plan to have dsl in every household by 2020. So why cant this happen?

I cant wait till Telkom is dead.

This is the way many SA's feel and unfortunately they are so integrated... lets just say its the same problem we have with Eskom

WACS has a design capacity of 5Tbps, it's running at 500Gbps at the moment.

The people complaining about being too far from the exchange, deal with it it's a reality of how ADSL works the world over.

One of my guildies that lives in Sweden, one of the most advanced countries in Europe when it comes to broadband, can only get a 2Mbps ADSL line becuase he's too far from the exchange.

Go read the terms on the guys that offer 24Mbps ADSL the world over, they will all state "Speed dependant on distance from exchange"

They usually think they are .. but nobody's too big to fail.

Telkom have been milking us with their overpriced and substandard products for way too long, I'm still paying 4meg rates despite Telkom only delivering around half that, it's time to give something back.

I agree as I also have a 4MB line and I think ICASA is doing this for us but I just hope they pull thru at the end of this year

This makes sense. In the rest of the world your isp dictates your speeds. Its the same piece of copper no matter the speed ;)

Sad to see how many people have been indoctrinated to think the Telkom way.

What does this mean exactly? Will telkom still be upgrading their 384kbps to 1mbps?

I wish Telkom was more socially connected via Facebook and Twitter?

There is nothing to stop us from breaking Telkom up into several separate smaller companies.

I am inclined to agree with you, this could work in SA, and is the standard model used by many other countries. I just don't think it will be fair to set that cost at what the fastest ADSL line atm costs, I hope they set it to somewhere in between, like R200 - R250, and then your ISP determines your speed and cost p/m.

Telkom just need to make sure their terrestrial capacity is up to the task, specifically bandwidth between DSSU and DPSU exchanges. The recent upgrade of my local exchange, which was terribly congested, obviously did give me the impression that they are hard at work on their infrastructure.

The crux of the problem has alsways been that Telkom is used to making money and lots of it. Fair or unfair does not seem to bother the DoC. And no matter what as long as the DoC turns a blind eye Telkom will keep its profit levels up. That is business for you...

Of course the worst thing is that Telkom has been chucking a significant portion of the money they make at bad investments all over the show - And In the process losing billions

It really makes you want to throw up
