I have a server in the US hosting several websites. If I log in using my Telkom SAIX account I can't access some of these websites (Gateway timeouts), yet the server is not down and I can see the sites fine when using cache.saix.net:8080, or when using my Axxess semi-shaped IS account and my WebAfrica test account. Also no problem seeing them on the Vodacom network.

I have a client who is accusing me of not giving him hosting service as he is on Telkom ADSL and can't see his site. I've tried explaining this DNS issue to him, but he is playing dumb user and unfortunately my expertise in this is not the best.

What can I do and who can I take it up with at Telkom?

Thats not a DNS issue but rather an issue with the transparent proxy and its ability to reach your site. You best bet is to log a call with your ISP and get them to send it through to SAIX.

Question: what is this "transparent proxy " and how come this doesn't affect the WebAfrica trial account, which is on SAIX?

It is a proxy server that is used to cache web content to speed up web browsing. You web traffic is automatically passed through the server by the routers on the network.

This particular proxy wouldn't affect the WebAfrica trial accounts - but WebAfrica are busy doing optimization their own proxy. That would be one of the reasons for the trial

Thanks. It's kind of alarming to think that an ISP could ignore entire servers on the internet.

I've logged the fault with Telkom who tell me that if I don't hear anything further I should call SAIX directly on 10215. I wonder if they will actually do anything about this?

This is ridiculous.

I have spent over three hours on the phone to these chops and not a single person at Telkom or SAIX seems to know WTF I am talking about.

Are there any users here who are on Telkom ADSL accounts (not using a proxy) who cannot see this site: www.backpagesport.com?

On Telkom today I have had DNS type problems, by this I mean when you type in an address it does not do a DNS lookup, then 2 minutes later it does and it works, i have done some basic pining as well with the same results ....

Thanks. It came right last night at about 6pm, but I still have some serious speed issues with the sites I have on that server and need to find out from SAIX why people not using a proxy were not able to access any sites on that server for pretty much an entire week.

When I called 0800500200 they told me to call 10215. I did that and 10215 told me to call SAIX directly on 0800222772. SAIX told me to take a hike and call my ISP on 10215, which I did again and then of course the Telkom ISP told me to call 0800500200 and speak to the hostmaster who via one of their lackies told me they could do nothing and that the problem was with my server (but they can't explain why the server is perfectly visible when using a proxy). FFS!!!
