Telkom doubles ADSL data for free

ADSL is old tech. LTE is the future. (only if you're in major metro areas for now)

- Rock solid pings and stable

- High download speeds

- No line rentals

So for R199pm I get 20GB per month from 8ta. No other costs.

For me streaming was the only thing we used in my household. I cancelled my ADSL this month because I am moving in January and away for most of December. But now with my 10 year old daughter the comfortable Netflix is a thing of the past. I must get her favorite shows now at work or via my mtn Uncapped connection, deal with a new huawei 3G router that the DNS does not work properly and only half the pc's in the house have Network / Internet connectivity and copy and paste shows onto the media server each night. That is a HUGE schlep compared to the Netflix experience where she only pressed play and did not bug me every 30 minutes. it was nice not to hear every day what I must get for them to watch. With netflix and Hulu they chose what they wanted to watch and I had a LOT MORE FREE TIME. :) But I must also add, seeing a extra R1000 a month go into my Credit Card and the work paying for my Mtn Uncapped I am VERY tempted not to get ADSL again.

Are these Huawei routers any good? I got the huawei b68a yesterday at Makro and the thing is currently a nightmare. I can connect, but some pc's or tabs gets internet, some get a network connection only with limited service while some get unidentified network a lot. I got that one because my mifi device works awesome. But the big brother looks horrible. I did however see this morning that ipv6 was enabled with ipv4 under the dhcp server, so I will see later if it works when I get home.

He is probably still on the 8ta "GO BIG" 10+10GB for R199 contract special that was running for a short while over a year ago. They deemed it unsustainable and stopped offering it. Existing clients got to keep it though... :)
Still, 10+10GB (the latter 10GB being 12am-6am Night surfer data only) is hardly enough for most of us. LTE is a great technology, but like any wireless technology it will suffer when you increase caps and lower pricing, because all users share the same spectrum, so more users means less free spectrum. That means nice latency and good speeds go out of the window. A/VDSL is still a better choice in theory, but most Telkom exchanges are so oversubscribed these days that you may as well forget that too... :(

I'm glad for you and ponder, but my simple experiments have shows time and again that this is a Telkom issue:

Torrent sits there, not downloading more than 2/5/10kb per second. Sometimes this improves after 12am, but often it does not. Switching to a free or prepaid capped Afrihost account at any time of the day instantly results in the very same torrents downloading at line speed.

Also, fooling Telkom by using a cloud torrenting service works wonders.

Clearly, Telkom is severely shaping torrents on my side, and not only during business hours, but also at night and over weekends.
