Telkom drops ADSL and data prices further

Thats good news and certainly progress but its still not cheap enough. It won't be until its under R300 for an always on connection but its good news non the less.

Although that is sort of good news, it's just NOT ENOUGH

Looking at the entry level, it's only a saving of R60.00. Are they forgetting what the word entry level means and why people will go for this and not the higher priced versions?

I just feel that if they want to make statements like this: "She added that Telkom’s managed reduction of data and ADSL tariffs was one of the ways the company was contributing to reducing the cost of doing business in South Africa." there should be way more effort put into the process. Again the spindocters hard at work

None the less if it was'nt for RPM and the gang I'm sure we would not even have gotten this. Hats off to you guys, keep it up and maybe more reductions can be had untill we are finally in line with the rest of the univers. ...maybe another ICASA hearing

"Telkom has not increased its ADSL prices since it launched the ADSL service in 2002. On the contrary, the company lowered ADSL prices by 12% in March this year when it reached a 50 000 customer mark, lifting the ADSL subscriber base to a record 67 000 to date."

They make it sound as if they're doing us a favour. I'm still sticking with my uncapped 256k wireless connection for half the price of Telkom'e entry level 192k ADSL. Maybe next time.. this is what people would tend to call progress though :)

This price reduction is merely a corrective mechanism in the face of public outrage to the punitive pricing of the past, and an endeavour to soften the continued blows they're facing. I would've been more impressed and convinced of their endeavours to "contributing to reducing the cost of doing business in South Africa", if their announcement had been accompanied by (1) a committment to increase the complement of their field staff to handle rollouts caused by increased demand (as opposed to their continuing retrenchments), and (2) removal of the punitive 'downgrade charge', which is not technically justified at all, but merely a marketing (read: profit) maintenance mechanism. Corporate cretins!

I agree, well said!

This is probably the only country in the world where a business DSL line costs the same as a residential DSL line.

Still not good enough, but then again Telkom will never get a cent from me again... even if they remove the cap! It's now a matter of principle!

Watch people - they had an advance copyof the ICASA hearings results. I will bank good money on that. Lets see when the hearing results are released to us.
I guarantee you it slated Telkom.
We have to count this as a roaring success for MyADSL
Cheers :D

we should now start lobbying for the same structure here as the UK and US where the only charge is from the ISP/Service provider. The payback to Telkom should be from the revenue the ISP generates off their customers. For instance in the UK I paid ÂŁ19 a month for my 512 ADSL service (in 2002/3) and there were NO OTHER CHARGES. I paid this to BT who were my supplier and ISP. Bulldog and companies like this charge their customers x for service and I assume out of that x, y is paid by them to BT. This is how it should work - not like now where everybody gets a piece of the action and price tiering is taking the product way out of reach of average Joe.

I don't think we will ever see the 192 kbps rental drop to below that of ISDN.
Telkom obviously wants to sustain their revenue stream from this (outdated) cash cow for as long as possible.

This is STILL NOT GOOD enough! The cap is still there, you still need to pay the ISP fees, still need to pay for POTS line rental, I'll still stick to my dialup.

Telkom loves to make themselves look like they're the good guys. That they really do care about giving a good service for the price you have to pay. But the bottom line is that this reduction was only due to the pressure received because of the ICASA hearings.

Personally, any reduction in the cost will help me financially, but R90 less for Home384 - oh come on! We want the line rental dropped! I would be satisfied to pay R359 all inclusive with a minimum of a 10GB cap. And I won't stop pushing for it until thats exactly what I get.

to quote finance24

In addition, tariffs for International Private Leased Circuits via submarine cable and satellite will be reduced by 28%.

And telkom goes and lowers it infrastrunctor colse by 18%.. what about the isp charges because of the bandwidth being cheaper.... and why is a piece of copper cable a different price to rent depending one what bandwith you gonna run over it...

What we need to bolster this into actual good news, as opposed to a watered down offering, is the announcement that Telkom will drop their ISP fees as well as rental !

If they dropped this by R50 across the board, then we're talking progress !
