Anyone else experiencing this tonight? My Telkom DSL keeps disconnecting after a few minutes. The DSL light stays on, but the auth light is green for a few minutes, then red and the internet doesnt work. Then after a few minutes, its green again.

Had the same problem
Checked everything before phoning Telkom
Router was reporting ATM down and down and showing no CD ( carrier detect )
Phoned the Telkom centre and reported
About fifteen minutes later ADSL was back up -- still up now

What was causing the problem ?
Do Telkom ever explain exactly what was wrong ?

Perhaps they are swapping out equipment ?
Testing what needs to be done for the -- State of Emergency ?

It seems the line is losing sync.

Came right late last night. Was ok today, happened once, I think. Now its on the fritz again, losing sync every 10 minutes or so.

Great. Will phone Telkom tomorrow for a port reset.

Is this good or bad?

SNR Margin:
4.0 dB (Downstream)
9.0 dB (Upstream)
Line Attenuation:
33.5 dB (Downstream)
31.5 dB (Upstream)

Hi Trent242. Your downstream line attenuation of 33,5 dB means the length of your copper wire to the exchange is 2,4 km. Under 2 km is better, but 2,4 km is not bad. 3 km would be bad.

There’s something wrong with your downstream SNR of 4,0 dB. It should be at least 6 dB.

This article says: “On a good line, BT (British Telecom) generally considers that a 6 dB SNR margin is appropriate to maintain a connection without a significant number of drops or errors.”

Hi Trent242. I thought that ASSIA would rectify your SNR automatically. Please check on your router’s stats, if must say “interleaved” and not “fast path” … then you’re on the ASSIA system. My guess is that you are on ASSIA, everybody is. Given time, your problem might rectify itself, ASSIA should fix it for you, automatically.

Hi Trent242. This is about all I can give you about ASSIA. The way I understand it, it's a bit of artificial intelligence that Telkom hires from ASSIA. ADSL works a lot better with ASSIA.

Well... I'm now officially without internet since Thursday evening. Logged the call yesterday morning. 6 phone calls to Telkom since, I was informed that a technician was dispatched yesterday, but was 'undispatched' (their word) at 14:30 again. My landline works intemittently, DSL line syncs occasionally but refuses to auth with either my Webafrica or Telkom account. Tried 4 routers no luck. Voice calls are nigh on impossible to make. So much noise on the line... Crackle pop and wind noise... Souns like a capacitor that's blown. Feel like Fkn screaming right now.

Openserv phoned me yesterday after I logged the call, just to confirm that the fault still persists. Confirmed but haven't heard anything from them since. Tried phoning them back on the number they used, but now the number doesn't exist.

My 4 meg telkom line is stuck at 960kbps for the last two weeks. Reported the fault many times, no solution yet.

Been without Internet since the 20th December 2017. Telkom has given me various excuses. TelkomZA could not assist. Today they told me to be patient. As the technicians are back logged with no idea when the backlog will be cleared.
