Goodbye DSL

Telkom digital subscriber line (DSL) customers are now few and far between, with the network operator's DSL subscriber base having dropped below 120,000, its interim results for the six months ended 30 September 2022 have revealed.

DSL users in South Africa are now at their lowest point since 2006.

LOL. Good riddance, still remember being tricked into thinking 192Kbps was "broadband" back in '05 , something only Telkom could do, haha.
Not to mention what it cost, together with 2GB caps!

It was still awesome to migrate from 56Kbps dial-up to DSL! The change was just as remarkable when I moved from 4Mb DSL to 20Mb fibre.

On 45Mb vdsl because fibre in my area costs too much, nearly R300 more than equivalent line speed not 2km away that a friend has.

I've just come from someone who still has 10 / 2 DSL. Gotta say, it was pretty damn responsive. I guess that's what happens when you're one of the only users on the DSLAM.
Back when I had ADSL, the latency to game servers were actually better than my fiber now.

...it's like writing an article and saying the number of 1970s VW Beetles on our public roads are at their lowest.
ADSL is dead. It's a natural progression.

Yeah the dslam's are pretty empty so it's actually become reliable. Also supports ipv6.

Dear Telkom.
ALL the infrastructure was in place to systematically replace copper with fibre and wireless.
You could have OWNED the Southern African market.
Obviously at decent pricing, on par with the rest of the world.
Your numbers would have been in the tens of millions...
But no. You are useless.
Have been for the last 20 years!
Ever since you started gouging us with ISDN and Diginet.

RIP you unstable, expensive lightning magnet bastard, may you find excellent attenuation and S&R in the afterlife.

in 2006 had a 192kbps line... oh the days of downloading over weekends, with CallMore time...and having to hear it from my parents...
DSL wouldn't be affected by call more time?

Not surprising - Openserve [unexpectedly] rolled out fibre to our 'burb and everyone I know jumped on it.
