Having been present during the install of a Telkom FTTH trial, I would say the installation is no more complex/time consuming than that of a POTS line, which has no 2 year contract. Sure, charge more for the installation to cover the additional fibre expense, but a 2 year contract for a home user is excessive.

Well, some people do. What remains to be seen is if a contract can carry over to a new house if you move. Case in point - I sold my house this year and I'm renting (for perhaps another 12 months), which means I can't get fibre even though it's available.
 
Another pitfall of being locked into a two year contract would be possibly not benefiting from price drops in the future.

Sadly in the Durban area Telkom is the only realistic option as far as fibre goes at this stage so for us it would be a case of take it or leave it....
 
Well fiber is nice and all, it may take many years to reach everyone.

To be quite honest, if Telkom actually cared about their customers needs, they could offer high upload speeds on ADSL2+ using the Annex M standard.

Further to that, with VDSL2 it is possible to offer for example 20, 50 & 100mbps symmetrical services, as this was the intention of the VDSL2 standard, to offer symmetric links. Just sad that Telkom have missed the boat.

Granted, VDSL2 is very fussy when it comes to copper length/distance, but could Telkom not allow us to test what the max speed our lines could handle and lock our lines to that speed?

Never actually seen this.

Most providers, including telkom usually upgrade you even in contract when their offerings improve. Whether it be more speed or more cap.

I don't have the prices but I'm in the process. I also had a chat to my Telkom Business Account Manager and he said it would be priced quite well - he estimated 100mbps at around R1800 for home. While my options are 10/10mbps uncapped fibre R499 20/20mbps uncapped R899... 50 and 100mbps uncapped R1499 and R2899 respectively - all includes a phone and voice line keeping your Telkom number and calls are at competitive rates if you use your telephone still. I believe the install is around R1500 and includes everything.

I've got some breaking news!

I've just been on the phone to Telkom to upgrade my line in the Everton area of Durban and placed my order for a 40meg ftth line.

The prices Telkom gave me for the 20 and 40 meg lines are:

20/20 line with a 50gb soft cap - R849.

40/40 line with 100gb soft cap - R949.

Both lines have night surfer which is free data between 12 and 6am, and once the soft cap is reached the line speed halves. It is on a 24 month contract with free installation.

They are taking orders for the fibre lines in our area so for those who are keen it might be a good idea to book your line as it seems that Telkom take a long time to actually get the installation done.

All of this is what the consultant told me and her systems were running very slowly and they are going to call me back to confirm all of the above, including what happens if you want to adjust your line speed during the contract period but at least it gives some idea of whats available.
 
I'd rather like to avoid Telkom as much as possible on their FTTH lines
