Hey guys
Am considering getting the Telkom promotion to have some affordable internet for three months without contractual obligations (cough cough, mtn, voda, cell c, 8ta...neotel...-_-). I have a few questions that need urgent explanation before the promotional period runs its course in a few days

1) I'm a student, but next year i wont be and will hopefully be earning a stable salary. Thus I will fianally have myself proper internet. I asked a telkom sales consultant about what my options are and she said that i must pay a "security" deposit of R700 to be able to get the deal. She also said i will only be refunded the deposit after i cancel the line, but the thing is I wont want to cancel the line as I will be able to afford it next year...thus I wont get my deposit back until I cancel. So what are my options here.
2) At the end of the 3 months can i retain my phone line and adsl line, but get the data from another ISP (mweb, WA?) or will i have to cancel everything to be able to sign up for another ISP.

So ya, those are my questions...please assist :)

Sounds to me typical Telkom. They are going to keep your R700 if you continue with them. They still owe my wife's business a refund for 2 months of ADSL that they charged her while she never ever applied or had ADSL installed. I just gave up. They can stick it.

My objective advice is to get a Telkom line and a different service provider. ISP's are nowadays also selling lines but I would advise against it - it makes for difficulty when you decide to change your ISP.

1) you'll anyway have to pay a R700 deposit even if you only apply for the 1st time next year, so you can call it even-stevens on the deposit should you decide to continue.
2) you should be able to cancel the isp portion but keep the line on ADSL anytime, but seeing that is a promo I'd first find out from Telkom if I were you. get something in writing if you can.

Why not stay with Telkom as your ISP? Their prices are pretty competitive as of late, and they're pretty reliable as a ISP. Admin with Telkom just sucks though.

If by next year after the promotion i might, but will wait till then....

I applied online on Monday night, got a call yesterday confirming details. Didn't know bout the R700 ?
3 months free internet and you get to keep the modem, is that not a win-win situation ?

I've got vodacom mofaya but now got licence to dl for free.

Well i applied, there was no mention of the R700 security deposit? So now i wait for the technicians to come around...maybe my first bill will have the security amount added...or maybe the consultant i was talking to was taking me for a ride and just wanted to pocket R700 bucks!

I just got the deal.

Definitely no R700 deposit and you do not get to keep the modem, under the terms it states they can take it back if you do not carry on with them.

What ping should I be getting on 1 mb acc anyway?

They won't. It's not worth the paperwork...

.ja, i dont think they'll go through all the effort of officially claiming it back either. but i do recall reading they retain the right to as it remains their property

I predict a marketing drive to try and keep as many of these new ADSL users as possible. Reduced rate, etc...

indeed, and i figure because it's a bundled package you can't just cancel the ISP account without also canceling the line then probably having to pay 'installation' when you reapply.
either way, imo it's a clever hook. i'd guess the majority of ppl who went for it were on 56k dailup, and now that they've had a taste i highly doubt they'd want to go back. even techno-ouma only doing email

As predicted... here's the next one! http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/373160-Free-3-month-ADSL-trial-on-1mbps-uncapped-line!

/polishes crystal balls :D

**** sakes. So the new promotion comes out as soon as i've applied for the capped one!!! I wonder if i can cancel the other promotion and sign up for the new one?

Well i went to telkom direct store in pavillion, asked the lady there if i can cancel the previous order. She put in the cancellation order, so that will go through in a few days and then i can apply for the new promotion. One bad thing though was she said there were no exchange ports open in my area...so even if i do apply for the new promotion, i might still have to wait an extra while before i get the deal :/. Oh well, at least there's the possibility of me getting more value for my cash!

I rate you don't get internet from telkom if you are a student. Getting net from telkom means you must sign a contract (very expensive to cancel).

If you don't have to sign a contract for Voice Line and ADSL Line, buy those both, then buy a modem seperately from somewhere. Afterwards, go to an ISP (I recommend OpenWeb) and get ADSL there - there are no contracts on their uncapped Lite plan (Uncapped Lite is unshapped, uncapped starting at R196 per month.)

Good advice.
