Not sure if this has been posted before, but I just bumped into the following promotion on the Telkom website:

https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/camp...tent=home_banner&utm_campaign=telkom_uncapped

Basically, you get free 3 months ADSL line rental on a 1mbps line + ADSL modem + uncapped data account. No strings attached, cancel at any time before 3 months and you don't pay a cent. I can't seem to find info on the previous promotion, which included a 6GB data cap instead of uncapped.

This is a really good deal. Are Telkom waking up and listening to consumers? Or has their hand been forced by the competition, who are eating away at their data revenues like there's no tomorrow.

Their previous '3 month trial' offer ends today, so this is indeed (great) news for me! I'm seriously contemplating moving over my 56k clients to this as a trail run and then afterwards maybe moving them over to the 384k @lantic ADSL Evolve product at R60pm...

You have clients still running 56K? :wtf:

Are you crazy? Are they crazy? If they are business clients, you need to move them over already, 2 years ago, at the latest. You will probably end up saving them more money by putting them on ADSL, not to mention greatly reducing their frustration (and hence yours too, I'm guessing your manage their IT/telecoms needs/infrastructure) and showing them what REAL (though entry-level by global standards) internet is all about. You should put all business clients (SMEs) on a minimum 4mbps ADSL connection.

Unless of course by "56K clients", you were referring to your existing 56,000 customers.

Obviously this is aimed at new ADSL users... pity, as I am about to sign up for the 1Mb Uncapped account!

From the T&C's in the OP's link:

Who qualifies for this promotion?
  • Customers who were not registered Telkom account holders between 1 April 2011 and 14 October 2011.
  • Current Telkom account holders without broadband since 1 April 2011.

i have just signed up for the 5 gig (Blended) + 20 gig (local) three month promotion
then it got increased to 8 gigs. Great. an extra 3 gigs!

NOW THIS!?
I am so bedonnerd that consumers are so screwed my hellkom again....
and there is absolutely nothing one can do about it....

Has the 5GB free trial been increased to 6GB or 8GB. How would you find out?

my 3 months free trial ends 28 october...i have not decided yet if im going to continue BUT TELKOM CLEARLY MADE THAT DECISION FOR ME BY CHARGING ME IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!!!!! MFERS!!! ALSO i have 700 mb of blended data left over and about 8 GB of local but they decided to "stop" my internet access. i called them to dispute this and the B..CH hung up on me..so i will be cancelling this free offer and ill see if i get my refund for the advanced billing(which they confirmed that if i cancel i will get back)

Hi guys,

I have a friend who was called by Telkom and offered this 3-month free trial. They were told they had "been selected and qualified" and also told that after the 3 month trial the monthly cost would only be R399. They accepted the offer and a few days later a Technician came out to their house (in Midrand) with the router. He installed the ADSL line and tested it. He did not set up the router.

This was 2 weeks ago. They have not been given their ADSL Account details yet so they cannot configure the router or log in to it. They have not been able to use the internet yet. They have been calling the Telkom Call Centre Number almost every day for 2 weeks, including weekends, to try to get their ADSL Account Details. The call is never answered. The longest they spent on hold waiting to speak to a consultant before giving up was a half-hour.

We finally got a consultant on the line and they refused to assist us, saying that we had to call from the home telephone that we're requesting the account details for, and then wouldn't give her the information because her husband is the account holder. I'd like to advise her to cancel the Telkom Bandwidth and just get her bandwidth from another provider (we get free 5GB accounts from our company) - How much is the Telkom 1MB Line Rental (with Voice Line Rental) per month alone without the Uncapped Package?

When I told her that the monthly cost would be R658 per month she almost passed out since they told her on the phone that it would only be R399.

Sounds fishy. I have not heard of Telkom actively phoning people to sell this free service. Are you sure the technician was a real Telkom employee, and not someone planting a listening device in your friends home?

Very strange, in the last 2 years, I have called Telkom at least 2-3 dozen times, and have not been on hold for more than 10 minutes, with the average pick up time being under 2 minutes. This is in the JHB region. Perhaps different regions are served by different call-centers, with different response times?

We finally got a consultant on the line and they refused to assist us, saying that we had to call from the home telephone that we're requesting the account details for, and then wouldn't give her the information because her husband is the account holder.

Sounds about right. They won't just divulge personal information to anyone who asks. You have to verify your identity as the account holder, before Telkom will take any action on your account, or provide sensitive information. Otherwise any Tom, Dick or Harry could whatever he wanted to on anyone's account. All you would need is their phone number, and their name, which is already stored on cellphones (including stolen/lost ones).

Voice Line Rental - R152 per month
1mbps ADSL Line Rental = R289 per month

I'd recommend she sort it out with Telkom. Let her husband do the calling and talking to Telkom, since the account is on his name. It really is a good deal. I've set this up for a few family members and it works well.

Read here for more info: Free 3 month promo for Telkom 1mbps ADSL uncapped all-in-one account.

When I told her that the monthly cost would be R658 per month she almost passed out since they told her on the phone that it would only be R399.

If your friend already has a Telkom line, and has had one for a while, then she is already paying monthly voice line rental of R152, which could be included as part of a Closer package. So on top of the R152, she will be charged R399 per month, for 1mbps ADSL line rental plus the data package.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, we're certain it was a real Telkom employee. They actively find Telkom customers without ADSL lines and call them up to offer them the ADSL free trial as a way to get more subscribers.

Thanks for the rates and the explanation thereof. She will be keeping the 1mbps Line and will just use her free 5GB Plugg Account for bandwidth. I'll provide more feedback once the husband confirms that he got the ADSL account details and they have been successfully connected to the interwebonetubes.

EDIT: R152 (Voice) + R399 (ADSL Line + Uncapped Account) = R551pm. What are we missing from the equation?

Nothing. You're spot on. If you've never had a Telkom phone line on account, than ADSL will seem extremely expensive. But if you already have a Telkom line, you are already paying voice line rental, and you only need to add an additional R399 for the package, which is quite expensive (i.e. not extremely expensive).

Okay but then where does the R658pm figure come from, if Voice + ADSL + Uncapped added together is only R551?

OK I stand corrected. The uncapped promotion will cost R658 (1mbps line rental + uncapped package) after the 3 months. Telkom initially ran a similar promotion, but instead of uncapped, they offered a 6GB cap. The cost for this was service would have been R399 after the 3 months expired. This promotion is however no longer available, and it was replaced with the current uncapped promotion.

Both the above prices exclude voice line rental, which you still have to pay.

The initial 5Gb offering, has that been increased to 6Gb, 8Gb or 2
10Gb. I'm hearing varying versions but can find no info. My telkom usage on the website doesn't show the cap.
