It turns out our router was defective but when I phoned telkom to see if I could enable wireless, resetting the router took down our internet connection.

I phoned back, and my conversation with another operator included this:

Telkom: Do you want to connect to the router with a cable or with wireless?
Me: Well actually both - you see we have a couple of computers with wireless enabled....
Telkom: No you can't choose both.
...
...
Me(a few minutes later): Well I'll choose cable for now.

It got worse a little later on.

Telkom:Open a web browser and go to 10.0.0.2 .
Me: Righto - I'm at 10.0.0.2 and I'm logging in with the web username admin and password admin and the page is now up.
Telkom: Now type in the username admin.
Me: I've done that.
Telkom: How can you say that you have typed it in? What page are you on?
Me: I'm at the logged in place.
Telkom: No. You need to go to 10.0.0.2 .
Me: But I've done that.
Telkom: You can't ask what to do and then say you have already done it.
...
Me: Ok I'm going to 10.0.0.2. What on earth must I do now?
Telkom: You must type in the user name admin.
Me: How exactly do you spell that?
....

We fixed the internet connection, but after resetting the router and updating the internet username and password. I was then accused of mistyping the details three times. She could not provide a explanation as to why the internet connection died in the details were not changed in any way.

Please do not let telkom know that we can now connect to the new router with both ethernet cable and wireless simultaneously.

Hahaha!! That's funny but if you really want bad support, try MTN.... wow!! They actually are the worst

hehehehe :D

adding to the OP.

The otherday my net was down for sometime I called my ISP. The problem was not on their side. So I turned the router off. Left it for a while & then turned it on again. Still nothing, so I turned it off. ....then called telkom. goes something like this:

me: complains net's not working.... says router off right now etc...
Telkom: Can you turn your router on then? coz i need to recreate the ports
me: Lady it is off recreate the ports then I'll turn it on.
Telkom: No I need to follow processes. turn it on.
me: ok /turns on router.
me: it's on now
Telkom: ok now turn it off so i can recreate the ports, then you can turn it on again

///sigh

ROFLMFAO!

Telkom make me angry, you wouldn't like me if I'm angry.............. HULK MASH TELKOM

shame, I have actually had some really helpful tech support from telkom

Here's another winner!

So I'm out at a client testing why their DSL lines have no connectivity.

I take a modem, put it back to PPPoE mode and use my personal Telkom account credentials just to check if the modem can establish a PPPoE connection.

Tech support: "Hi, what are you using the modem for?"
Me: "We're using it in bridge mode, connecting to a Vox Fishbone, but it's not making a connection. Now we're testing it with a Telkom account."
Tech: "Ok, please contact your ISP."
Me: "No, I'm using this modem now with a Telkom account, trying to make a PPPoE connection."
Tech: "No, Telkom is not your ISP."
Me: "Look, I'm trying to get this modem to dial up with my Telkom account, so yes, you are my ISP and this is your DSL line. I need you to please recreate the port for me."
Tech: "No, no- Telkom is not your ISP. Phone Vox and tell-"
Me: "I'm using a DSL modem with a Telkom account- It's not making a PPPoE connection. With your account. The modem is not connected to the Vox router anymore."

After this I had to explain it to him about 3 more times.

Tech "Um.......<silence>.....please phone [proceeds to give me a number]
Me: "What's this number?"
Tech: "Please phone that number, it's for advanced ADSL support"
Me: "................ok....Thanks......."

That's right about when I gave up and I didn't phone again. :/

Rule of Thumb with Telkom, don't tell them anything about another ISP unless you have to....

I dunno, I've actually found that Telkom support has been pretty positive for me.

My rule of thumb- I'm not phoning them again for support! I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that, only under very extreme circumstances. I would go mad, I swear!

I've never had problems with their support either, maybe I've been lucky thus far.

WHAT"S THE NUMBER?

Save us all the trouble- give us the direct number to someone with a brain!

On a side note, can we record these conversations?

When they give you the schpiel about quality etc, you can do something similar. All such ridiculous conversations can then be uploaded here for some comic relief.

i think you'll have to warn them though, much like they warn you while on hold
