Telkom increases SoftCap ADSL account prices

All these changes effective April 1st and I've heard nothing, zip, nada from Telkom themselves - a supposed "communications" company :mad:

I cant wait for Fibre in my town and completly kiss HellKom goodbye

Home SoftCap Advanced (40GB) – will increase from R549 to R559 per month.

This ^^ is some 4x the cost of my 60GB capped account through another ISP. How is this meant to be enticing?

That's the all in price

Get fast internet for email, browsing, banking and the occasional video chat.

Free Night Surfer data (12am - 7am)
1 Email account (with 3 GB of storage and 5 aliases)
Up to 4Mbps ADSL
Line rental included
40 GB SoftCap data
WiFi Enabled modem included

Only used my soft cap (Telkom ADSL data) for the integrated sim. Now I have to pay R10+R10 extra a month and only get 1gb of 3G data.... Gonna cancel that, sorry Telkom.

** Edit , wait the R10 extra is the copper line rental increase, not the soft cap.

Suitably enlightened. Thank you. Makes a little more sense now. Price increase in the face of their competitors looking for savings is a little bit daft.

Hlaudi takes over at TELKOM

These guys have lost the plot.
Accounting done the ANC way

When times are tight and there is even less disposable income -- push the prices up

SOMEONE has to take up the slack for all the MISSING BILLIONS
Every Gov department has been given their orders

K@K en betaal -- HOES sal jy !

Yes, you've got to wonder when a 'journalist' at a broadband focused site can't comprehend the difference between a standalone internet and a bundle that includes telephone line rental, DSL rental, and internet account.

To be clear, the prices of the 'Softcap' accounts are not changing.

The prices shown are all for bundles, some of which have not been for sale for over 6 years (the Do 1 bundle for R269 which includes telephone line rental (R189) and 2Mbps DSL (R165) for about R85 less than if you bought the two stand-alone, and 1GB of data for free).

The prices of bundles that include telephone line rental but where the bundle price is less than R600pm have been increased by R10 in accordance with the increase in telephone line rental.

Telkom has swallowed the telephone line increase for all bundles above R600.

But, reporting on this accurately (or not deleting Disqus comments on the article) wouldn't generate as many page views.

The only price I can find on Telkom's website that is R549pm is 'Do Advanced', which includes:
- Telephone line rental (R189->R199)
- Faster ADSL (4Mbps) (R299)
- 40GB Softcap account (R149)

The 40GB Softcap in the bundle then effectively costs you R549 - R189 - R299 = R61

The quality of the recent articles from MyBroadband is quite shocking, and this one borders on irresponsible.

No, a telecommuncations company. Telecommunications companies provide services for other people to communicate, they are often very bad at communicating ...

Then again, I was only informed about the (much larger in absolute terms) medical aid premium increases on supposed tech news sites such as this.

Telkom increases SoftCap ADSL account prices

Telkom has confirmed it will increase the prices of certain SoftCap Internet packages from 1 April 2017.

To be clear, the only products called 'Softcap' are the stand-alone internet accounts. The bundles which include Telephone line rental, DSL and a Softcap account, are currently called 'do Bundles' (at least on the website as it currently is).

So no, this is incorrect, the prices of the 'Do Bundles' that include telephone line rental, that have a bundle price of less than R600, have been increased by R10 to take into account the telephone line rental increase. Telkom is absorbing the price increase on all the other bundles.

From the article:
This comes after the company published its new tariff sheet for the year ahead – which included increased analogue line rental prices, from R189 to R199 per month.

The sentence above is about the only sentence in the article that is accurate.

SoftCap products which will receive a price increase are:
Home SoftCap Lite (1GB) – will increase from R269 to R279 per month.

The standalone 1GB Softcap product was grandfathered in about 2011 or 2012 at R79 for 1GB. At time, the next product was R99 for 5GB (IIRC). The R269 price would be for the Do Lite bundle, which includes:
- Telephone line rental (R189->R199)
- 1Mbps DSL (R165)
The total so far is R354, so the 1GB account comes free with a R85 discount.

Home SoftCap Basic (20GB) – will increase from R399 to R409 per month.

The author seems to be referring to do Basic, which includes:
- Telephone line rental (R189->R199)
- 1Mbps DSL (R165)

The total so far is still R354, so when taking the Do Basic bundle the 20GB softcap (R99 stand-alone) effectively costs you R45.

Home SoftCap Advanced (40GB) – will increase from R549 to R559 per month.

The author seems to be referring to do Advanced, which includes:
- Telephone line rental (R189->R199)
- 4Mbps DSL (R299)

Total so far = R488, so when taking the Do Advanced bundle, the 40 GB Softcap (R149 stand-alone) effectively costs R61.

Still, nothing is clear at present.

Ranger, with all due respect, and you do an amazing job trying to explain everything. However, I am still unsure about the IDS issue.

1)When does it kick in?
2)Is there an opt in and opt out option?

I really don't want to be billed for my 100 gigs dsl data and another R265 for IDS, when I haven't opted in for it.
