Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

In order to ensure that the account owner or authorized sees the notification that fair usage enforcement is active, all traffic except http traffic will be blocked, http traffic will be redirected to a page on tracker, where the user needs to log in and acknowledge the notification.

Once the notification is acknowledged, you will be limited to a lower speed 24x7, depending on your package, but not less than 384k, until the end of the month.

A lot of these aspects may change soon too (as there are obviously some shortcomings).

Okay thanks. :) That makes sense.

One last question, if you will. Let's say theoretically, I was to only connect to my TI account from 12 at midnight to 6am, would my usage on the tracker show as nothing? What would happen then?

I have no way to tell as the stats do not distinguish between them.

@ranger would it be possible to check what the usage was wrt nightsurfer & normal usage?

This is currently available to Softcap customers, and the intention is to make this info available to uncapped customers in the relatively near future.

My line has been dropping about 6 times an hour for the past few days. The DSL connection drops but comes back up after about 30 seconds.

Is this related to the authentication issues some people are mentioning or is it something else?

Also, it is syncing at only about 2.5 MB instead of the usual 4.

That sounds more like http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/122012-adsl-problems-caused-by-new-telkom-system-isps.html] this [/url].

I know some people in the team who worked on it, but we (Telkom Internet) have no involvement or any more information than other ISPs.

I know this is the uncapped thread, but does anybody who is on softcap know how to get back the night-surfer benefits once you reached your cap? I have reached my cap, then recharged with 1GB of data, yet night-surfer is still throttled to death with torrents reaching a maximum of 40 kilobytes per second on a 4MB line.

Checking the usage portal is also of no help as it is broken. AGAIN. The daily e-mails showing my usage do show the 1GB loaded though.

Im on a 10mb uncapped account and today I get a message saying that my account exceeded the fair usage policy.... Problem is not that its throttled but unusable. Just redirects me to that message page. I used MAX about 300gb. my laptop records the usage and says 260gb last 60 days. Add a few smart phones....

I cant be without net for rest of March!

Most other ISP's offer free 1 or 2gb packages. Have a look at Web Africa, Afrihost and Axxess. That should last you till the end of the month.

Anyone else having authentication issues?

On a 10MB I would think 400GB at least would be fair game before being considering excessive.

Did you read the page very carefully, and log in to tracker to acknowledge that you have read the fair usage policy? After that, you will be able to use the internet.

On 10Mbps uncapped you can do a lot more than 300GB outside NightSurfer time before you will activate the fair usage policy.

You aren't, but your knee-jerk reaction that Telkom is evil prevented you from continuing your use of the internet.

If you really did try and log in and acknowledge, and it failed, PM me your username, telephone number of the ADSL line and last 7 digits of the ID number of the account holder and I will acknowledge for you.

Why do we redirect users? Because the other knee-jerk reaction from users is that there is a problem with their line, they demand a technician be dispatched, and then get very upset when they need to pay an unnecessary call-out fee. We are actively working on other approaches that are not as intrusive.

I haven't specifically tested this myself, maybe I can test it tomorrow morning, but I can't see how this can happen. The soft-cap throttling is not time-dependent, so if you aren't throttled during normal hours (which you shouldn't be), you can't be throttled during NightSurfer.

PM me your username if you want me to check the status of the account.

good idea, thanks!

I dont have that option! I enter my username and pass and it just take me to another page that says :Click here to resubmit your details.

Username/password incorrect. Use the same username/password as on your router. Click the 'Forgot password' if you can't remember (but then update your router once you are finished changing passwords).

If you still don't come right, PM as I described earlier.

:D

238GB is nothing on a 4Mb/s line, it only matters when you get to the end of the red.

Agree, but I'm trying to get them used to the night surfer concept. Problem is that they game online and often go way beyond midnight. Then they come through and pause my DL's as it impacts on their lag, latency, etc.

The issue is that they then forget to restart my DLs!!!

Pfsense to manage your QoS? Only best effort but will keep their gaming going during nigh surfer while downloads in the background.
