Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Which region are you? Our Durban sites IPC links may be a bit heavily utilised at present and will get an upgrade soon.

Other initiatives for the other sites are making progress, but transmission links were very late (first one is 10 days later than planned, was finally completed today, would have taken much longer if we hadn't gone out of our way to help wholesale finish tasks quicker).
Thanks. This could also explain why my work link has been dropping all day and trying to force me to link via CPT rather than the DBN default. Very frustrating.

Does the midnight to 6 AM break from the fair usage include traffic from torrents as well ?

I have used 21 gigs total so far with about 7 gigs being between 0:00 to 6AM which means that about 14 gigs were used during normal times. My graph usage is way too high for 14 gigs though. I am on a 2 Mb line btw.

I've got a 2mb uncapped line and got a notice that my bandwidth consumption is affecting other the network and others users? used about 26gigs up to now, graph on the usage tracker is full.and its red! 26gig is really little for an uncapped account, any other reason for the notice maybe?

Thanks for replying, will keep an eye if you still having an issue. What router you use? Our netgear dgn2200 died (2 lightning strikes ouch) and now stuck with a very nice D-Link 2750u non TK branded and handles things well. Passed over 100GBs of internet traffic without any intermittent issues. Now it isn't so high :p.

Nice to pinpoint why you having this issue though.

I have a D-Link dsl-2500u in bridge mode. Then I have a Mikrotik RB751G which dials the PPPOE accounts, does the routing, NATting, DHCP leasing, ect. Gigabit Switch. And lastly a Tenda high gain 300Mbps AP.

There no problems with any of the kit. Adsl SNR is great on the 4Mbit line. Wireless links from the AP to devices are strong.

When I switch the internet route to an alternate pppoe account such as afrihost or WebAfrica i have no problems. YouTube streams perfectly in HD on those accounts, but never on telkom.

I use around 70gigs a month.

PS: I also have a D-Link 2750u. Still sealed in the box. Afaik the dsl2500u has one of the best adsl chipsets without going for full carrier grade equipment such as cisco, etc.

Hi Ranger,

I am in Auckland Park Johannesburg. From 2pm till midnight my ADSL runs at that speed every weekday. I switch to Afrihost capped account in order to watch youtube videos as on TI they are constantly buffer.

Haven't been following thread but I must say I have been super happy with my 4MB uncapped of late.

Can stream 720p YouTube without any buffering, downloads are well behaved at max speeds and this comes after I did my personal record of 80GB last month.

I think overall the threshold level drop helped, or something did, done at least 40GB already, and torrents flying during the day (save the big downloads for 12-6am)

My 4mb Uncapped tests fine to speedtest sites, but in practice 480p on Youtube will buffer half the time and even 360p at times.

Streaming is a no-go, torrenting almost totally dead even though scheduled between 12-6am.

Turns out I'm one of those who draw the short straw in the Telkom pot-luck. Going to try Afrihost.

The initiatives referred to above should bring improvements to international traffic in Gauteng by early next week.

No, IPC utilisation wouldn't do this, but the transmission failures on one of the Pretoria-Johannesburg routes yesterday most likely took one of the glasshouse breakout links up and down every 10 minutes, as was happening with half our Gauteng IPC links.

Other plans should reduce this particular effect in future if all the pieces come together.

Wow I love it when a 4mb line doesn't even play 360p without endlessly buffering. Good job Telkom.

Dropped Telkom and have been on Crystal web since beginning of the month. Pretty happy so far. So just another alternative for you.

That has nothing to do with Telkom Internet the ISP, that is a line issue and not relevant here.

Just checking in to say that P2P performance is still degraded daily between around 8pm-12am, but other than that my account is working great :)

I have a D-Link dsl-2500u in bridge mode. Then I have a Mikrotik RB751G which dials the PPPOE accounts, does the routing, NATting, DHCP leasing, ect. Gigabit Switch. And lastly a Tenda high gain 300Mbps AP.

That is a solid setup, i am stumped (not surprising am sure to you :) ) . So you and i concur that it is a Ti issue :(.

Best i can suggest to get this resolved is follow the following steps and trust me that will get you some answers :).

So, for any of the issues I have been looking at for users here, please:
1)Send an email to [email protected]. You should receive an auto-reply with a ticket number. Please include your internet username, the telephone number of the ADSL line you are using, and sufficient technical detail (the better the quality of the information, the better your chances of a quick resolution), e.g. traceroute, URL of a speedtest result indicating the problem etc.
2)If you don't have a resolution within 2 business days, or if it is really urgent, include the ticket number from (1) in a message to @TelkomZA on twitter or TelkomZA on Facebook

Keep me posted as i would like to hear that all is well. If anything, as a current subscriber, i believe where possible that an issue that comes about just like yours (rule out customer hardware) can be resolved and naturally gets lost in how to get resolved with how complaints in these rather large threads.

Last thing is, PM ranger with the above info if you don't get any results after a tweet or PM on FB after say 2 business days. I am positive he will go the extra mile ("Yuu runs in the corner") to help get it resolved :o.

Since my last report on how things improved, I can fortunately still say the same.
Haven't had any issues during the last couple of weeks and workday traffic, 720p streaming, 12-6 am downloading all good.
Router has been on one single session for the past 15 days.
I was on the brink of cancellation/downgrading and moving to another ISP - glad I didn't, although it appears that this can change overnight.
It is clear that the user experience is not consistent across all accounts.

Randburg area, 4mb line.
This month might be my highest usage month at around 70-80GB anticipated.

Please fix userstats. My TiTracker bar is at half way already and have no idea how much I've been downloading. I don't think it's been much
