Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Major ios updates effects loads of networks around the world, its not just a South African thing.

I suspect the IOS 8 update is having an effect on performance

No ****, Sherlock. It's that ****ing time of the ****ing year now. We had the exactly same issue last year when iOS7 came out. It lasted a whole ****ing week.

The difference being an iPhone in SA is not that common.

It is in relation to our network size, i dont know about Telkom but i've seen the IS usage charts during ios updates and its a massive % increase.

iOS updates started taking up a significant portion of the total traffic from about 18h00 last night. Software updates usually run at about 2-3% of network traffic, last night it was running about 20% of the total traffic, more than video normally uses.

Thanks for that info Ranger. Here in the Southern Cape the internet was badly affected last night. It was virtually impossible to download anything even between 12am and 6am. Must be a lot of Apple devices amongst the retired folk.:D

Lots of iFondleslabs here in Sedgefield too, but I got 8gb of stuff between midnight and 7am today. :)

This is a predictable event utilised by a fixed number of individuals downloading from a limited number of sources. Why wasn't TI prepared?
Is it because of the bandwidth squeeze we are seeing?

Who says TI were not prepared? Or that they needed to be?

Ranger was just stating a fact, making an observation. It's called keeping us in the loop.

Some of us are actually interested in these little insights into what's going on behind the little 'blinkinlightens' on our modems.

How do you 'prepare' for a one week event like this in any case?

While I noticed browsing was a little slow last night iPlayer didn't skip a beat and I haven't seen any real bitching about TI performance today.

... I guess rangers team have got the QoS nicely balanced :)

Streaming services useless tonight. Takes 5 min to log into psn, YouTube buffers constantly. Took me 20 min to do a play store update of 25 meg. eish!! This all due to ios updates???!

Keep in mind though, that it's probably not "only" the iOS update... many of the Apps are now rolling out updates as well. So when considering that many (Apple) houses might have at least an iPhone and iPad, then I guess it starts adding up quickly...

FWIW - TI down these parts is completely stuffed. Slowest its been since the big upgrade towards the end(?) of last year... Hopefully, it will sort itself out soon... Currently throwing money at Afrihost for their Capped offering...

Just had amazing customer service from social media team at Telkom, really impressed. Speeds back to normal

Sjoe, the last 2 nights my internet has been Painfully slow even local sites time out 10meg uncapped TI. First time in years I have had a problem with TI. Should I log a call with them or wait it out?
