Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Thanks a lot ranger, I appreciate the info. At least I can understand the situation. I suppose that although they're not intentionally blocking P2P, they've shaped it to the point where zero throughput is possible.

Unfortunately, since this is a 24 month contract, I only have a couple of days left to get out of it.

I can't wait a couple of months for this to possibly be fixed or adjusted, as I only have a couple of days to get out of this contract. It's sad because if it weren't for this, Smart Home Advanced would have been perfect for me.

Thank you CPA. :)

P2P is shaped worse in Cape Town at present as there wasn't sufficient capacity. The upgrades completed in December and cleanups mean we should be able to lift it soon (maybe early next week) subject to change approval.

Telkom's FUP only relates to Uncapped accounts. No mention of an FUP on SoftCap.

Ts&Cs on the free data you don't pay for after you have used the data you pay for make provision for limiting abuse if the value-add, for example by limiting video streaming and p2p.

Wait... So why am I unable to use the data I pay for, i.e the first 20GB's for P2P? After all, I'm paying for it and should be able to use it as I deem fit.

Can anyone answer my question please?
How far can I push the little green bar on the titracker before someone at Telkom calls and threatens to break my kneecaps?

what happens then? I get throttled?

if I do, will nightsurfer still be fast at least?

Orange is you warning, red you get throttled.

Your browser will direct you to a TI page where you have to acknowledge the TI Terms and Conditions before you can continue.

At this stage your service is throttled, night surfer included.

1) The severe shaping of P2P in Cape Town over the past 4 months or so is due to Telkom Wholesale taking 6 months to provision additional capacity.

We are now (as of yesterday) in a position to reduce the severity.

2) The fact that most capped products (off-topic in this thread, there is a thread for SoftCap) have p2p shaped like uncapped is because the product definition hasn't been changed. This is in progress, as I have noted in this thread in the past few days.

Afrihost (or any other competitor) doesn't have the same hassles in this regard, because other ISPs don't take them to the competition commission every 2nd month, and they don't need to submit proof of the profitability of every individual product at regular intervals. So, we are never allowed to over-spend on bandwidth.

The simple answer is it's better to use this tool to see your actual consumption on Uncapped: http://userstats.adsl.saix.net/
Ranger has hinted previously that they're currently discussing means of making the Fair Usage Policy more transparent, so just stay tuned ... I think we're about to see more info from Telkom.

I may be wrong, but I think you're safe as long as you stay at <100 GB/month (which should be plenty unless you're downloading the Internet).

Thank you very much once again for the information ranger. :)

The first line was all I needed to hear to put my mind to rest that I've make an informed decision.

Also, sorry for derailing this thread, I'll stop posting here.

I schedule my p2p in night surfer hours.

I've hit 280GB without hitting orange.

If you DL in non-night surfer hours, I reckon it will hit orange at around 100GB.

I'm on 76GB at the moment. Nothing downloaded during night surfer time.

This is what the usage bar looks like at the moment - 4Mb Uncapped ...
