I'd bet it is a physical cable issue - last time it was a short to earth that caused it.How can upload have more distance than download? It's the same twisted pair isn't it. More likely bad connection on the upload?

He can get a max DL of around 16Mbps but it will be very unstable. The techies tweaked his service for optimal performance. So, yes, they can up it to 1024 but he won't be happy with the result. The only way it will improve is if they replace the cable from the DP to the SDC and that won't happen any time soon.

... OT, one of the reasons I moved inland from Bluewater Beach (other than the sand everywhere when the wind blew) was the corrosion killing PC components.
It's a sacrifice I'm happy to make.![]()
Now, back to my original question… what profile do I choose in my prioritization? Do I go higher or lower than my actual line speed? Or leave it blank?
Instead of a drop down why couldn't they let you fill it in?
I'd leave it blank.
The latter.Just the upload speed or forget about prioritizing it altogether?

Don't trust that checker at all. It does not take the condition of the copper infrastructure into account.Would higher speeds be possible, and more stable at those speeds, on VDSL? Telkoms availability checker seems to indicate it might.

It looks purely at the theoretical scenario based on the type of equipment at the exchange (or ISAM in your case) and your distance from it.
I see they've added more choices since the initial implementation. Can't say I've seen any impact on performance since I enabled it but my IPCop router also does traffic shaping based on the following:Now, back to my original question… what profile do I choose in my prioritization? Traffic Shaping allows you to prioritize IP traffic moving through your firewall.
IPCop uses WonderShaper to accomplish this. WonderShaper was designed to minimize ping latency, ensure that interactive traffic like SSH is responsive, all while downloading or uploading bulk traffic.
Many ISPs sell speed as download rates, not as latency. To maximize download speeds, they configure their equipment to hold large queues of your traffic. When interactive traffic is mixed into these large queues, their latency shoots way up, as ACK packets must wait in line before they reach you. IPCop takes matters into its own hands and prioritizes your traffic the way you want it. This is done by setting traffic into High, Medium and Low priority categories. Ping traffic always has the highest priority — to let you show off how fast your connection is while doing massive downloads.
To use Traffic Shaping in IPCop:
Use well known fast sites to estimate your maximum upload and download speeds. Fill in the speeds in the corresponding Uplink and Downlink fields of the Settings section.
You can avoid downlink shaping by entering 0 into the Downlink speed field, or by leaving it blank.
Anyone else still getting terrible ping? I've been forced to use my Afrihost account any time I wanted to play games since my post over 20 days ago.

Hi ranger.
Please can you help. I am in KZN and between troubles in JHB and CPT i am unable to play most games where the server is located in Cape Town. Here is a copy of the trace route. My ping up until 10 week ago used to be between 50 and 65 which is still playable. Now it fluctuates between 200 and 400.
